SLA is great bc its unique, thus not quintessentially Southern
You can't have it both ways

You can add Western PA in.there, also.

There's nothing cajun about a lot of SLA and it's basically redneck from CENLA up.
There's nothing wrong with that. I like rednecks. There's just not much difference culturally between Clinton, Folsom or Walker and Mississippi.

Unless you're suffering from amnesia, you'll recall 5,000 threads about how NLA sucks bc its cookie cutter and just like the rest of the South, full of horrible Baptists who won't let people drink and gamble.
But SLA is wonderful bc its so different from the rest of the South.
Now we're getting people saying SLA is "quintessentially Southern"
I find it amusing

I’d say Alabama and Mississippi like most have said on here. 20 years ago Tennessee and S Carolina would be in the mix but white liberals fleeing what they voted for have taken them out. Surprised Arkansas isn’t higher up here. There is some old southern democrat feel but still very southern although white liberals fleeing what they voted for up north and California are invading NW Arkansas

I strongly disagree with this one. East Tennessee "working class people" are more culturally aligned with Kentucky and Ohio hicks and mountain hillbillies than they are with rednecks. And Nashville is more culturally similar to Cincinnati Ohio than it is with Birmingham.
You left out west Tennessee and Memphis where the natives are more culturally aligned with the Congo

Georgia easily (or at least the best representative of the South)
- not too far south
- thriving cultural production (films and music)
- has a major metropolitan city that is the de facto capital
- not too trashy or poor overall (looking at you Miss.)
- home to many fortune 500's
- produced a president (no matter your political opinion - a good man and statesman)
- good sports history (at least The Masters, UGA and the Braves)
- some mountains and nice rivers
- one of the best college towns in America
- Music legacy with James Brown, Allman Bros, REM, Black Crowes, Ray Charles and many more
- Historical city near the water (Savannah)

Mississippi. It's the most insulated state in the deep south and is where Bobbie Gentry is from. She had the most southern style of song writing I've ever heard.

I included "Many more", so covered technically

That’s a good map.
However, lumping in the Cajun triangle with the rest of the gulf coast doesn’t compute for me.

1. Alabama
2. Mississippi
3. S. Carolina (Charleston actually counts against them now, as it is NYC south).
4. Georgia (Atlanta dings Georgia even more than Charleston dings SC).
The rest have other issues
Tennessee now has “Austin” north
Kentucky is just southern Indiana
Arkansas is only southern south of I30/40
Texas isn’t southern either outside of East Texas
Louisiana south of Alexandria is not southern at all
Ditto Florida SE of the panhandle

Are we talking south or Deep South? I would probably agree with Alabama since they have the cotton region(black belt), but they also have some of Appalachia. Centrally located among the southern most states.
