President Biden is “sleepwalking” the US into another “catastrophic” war in the Middle East, an expert says, as Israel prepares a retaliatory strike after Iran’s historic missile bombardment over the weekend.
Biden, 81, is facing mounting pressure to silence critics who claim he’s allowed tensions in the region to escalate, as the threat of an Israeli counterstrike on Iran looms.
quote:
“The strategy of the Biden administration has failed miserably. Biden is sleepwalking the US into another catastrophic war in the Middle East,” Fawaz Gerges, professor of International Relations and Middle Eastern Politics at the London School of Economics told NBC News.
“His overarching goal of preventing the war in Gaza from escalating into neighboring countries has failed. Biden has failed to influence [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s decisions either in Gaza or towards Iran.”

"Sleepwalking" insinuates this is accidental.

The whole idea that he can instruct Israel to just ignore this attack since yhe results weren't that bad is textbook liberal idealism and could not be more disconnected from reality. The same goes for his "please just don't" statement to Iran.
It's just objectively stupid. Who in the frick do we think we are?

America, frick yeah! Coming again to save the motherfricking day yeah!
Seriously though, we have been the hyper power for so long that these idiots think that we fully dictate other countries’ actions instead of shaping them toward our ends.

There is nothing Biden can, or should, do to prevent Israel from trying to handle their business.
We need to stay TF out and let them deal with it.

Here's some more from Fawaz:

He's mostly upset that the US won't rein in Israel.
quote:
Meanwhile, skirmishes on the Israel-Lebanon border and US-led airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen and on Iranian-backed militias in Iraq suggest that the conflict may yet escalate further. America and Britain are gradually being sucked into the region yet again, though with eyes wide open this time. Biden claimed to represent a clean break from Donald Trump, but there is no daylight between them when it comes to the Middle East. There and in much of the Global South, Biden will be remembered as just another American president who devalued Arab lives, preaching democracy while supporting repression and violence.

Dems love them some war
Wait until China moved on Taiwan. He claims we'll defend Taiwan militarily. That's the end right there.

Except that Trump was able to achieve
A. historic peace agreements,
B. an agreement to leave Afghanistan a slow controlled manner to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition
C. Put Iran in it's place.
Other than that, meh, two sides of the same coin. Sure.

So he should order an attack?
What are you proposing?

That's Fawaz's claim.

I don't think he's saying that at all.
I think he's saying that we can't control Israel so if Israel counterattacks over this, the US is irrelevant to the situation. We have nothing to do with what Israel does or does not do.

Specifically I am proposing that he has no authority, need, or reason to tell Israel they can or cannot do anything. They are a sovereign nation, not a US vassal state. We have zero part to play in how they respond to an attack from another sovereign nation in a war that has nothing to do with the US

Israel has always decided for itself what actions to take. The release publicly of comments between Israel and the U.S. are for some kind of messaging or propaganda and are scripted and controlled. I wouldn’t read too much into public statements.

They rely on us for support. I think it's naive to say we are independent of all this. Here is tl:dr rant on that whole subject.

Would he rather a more robust response featuring US "leadership" that would end up putting us in the same position that we are in now with sleepwalking leadership?
I'm confused as to what Gerges means by that. We are not going to get into a catastrophic war. We wring our hands about this with anxieties stoked by by politicians here and the media, but in the end neither the militaries or the leaders want this to happen.

I can't speak for you, but I think we're the ones funding this shite while projecting historic weakness.
