Summer Trip to Italy Question

I have been to Italy before but not to Pompei. I plan on visiting Naples, Pompei, and the Amalfi Coast towards the end of the trip. Has anyone ever rented a car and made the drive from Pompei to Amalfi coast area? Is it worth it? Thanks!

We just got back from Rome, Capri, Positano. We didn’t rent a car, but will tell you the driving around Amalfi is brutal. Combine buses and mopeds with the narrow streets, and you’re in for a different world of crazy. And that’s before peak summer tourist season. Also, there’s virtually no parking in any of the cities.
If you’ve been, you may have an idea of what you’re getting into. If you’re comfortable driving, then I’m sure it would be a fun experience.

Serious question—what are you planning to do in Naples?
We caught the train from Rome to Napoli Centrale, then a taxi to the port, and a ferry to Capri. That was enough of Naples for us.

I wouldn't rent a car. They drive like madmen in Naples. You can get to Pompeii by regional train. I wouldn't want to drive the Amalfi coast either.

I have. You have to be on your A game while driving and be aggressive. Parking was not an issue really but we weren't there during peak season. So your experience may differ.

We hired a driver to take us to Pompeii and then Positano. Worth the price.

Our driver last summer was cosplaying an F1 driver on the way from Positano back to Naples I would love to drive it but if you don’t like winding roads next to 1,000 ft cliffs on the ocean with psycho Italian traffic you should get a driver.

We VRBO in Massa Lubrense caught the buss to the Sorrento train station all with ease. Pompeii is great but the crowds are crazy at peak times. Herculaneum was way less crowded. if you do go to pompeii like Disney look for their version of the hidden mickey, painted and stone carved dicks all pointing to the brothels.

Naples is like Palermo, a great place to buy a italian made switchblade. forget the car go check out the cali like gas prices of 2.20 per liter.1 gal =3.8 liters $8.30 per gallon. thats why everyone drives fiats and smart cars

I second getting a driver or taking the train to Salerno and then ferry. I wasnt able to look at the breathtaking scenery as my eyes were glued to the road most of the time. But if you want to do other things along the way, experience the drive along the cost, and are a confident driver, go for it! Two suggestions...rent a small car and ensure you have plenty of daylight for the drive back.

We got a private driver in that area and I recommend them very highly.

They took us from Naples to our hotel in Positano, then back to Naples. Friendly, reliable and reasonable.
