Not sure why Drew was even a candidate. Outside of the one championship year his tenure at Baylor has just been ok, by Kentucky standards. Wouldn't have been an upgrade over Cal.
I work with a Kentucky fan and he's convinced it's gonna be an NBA guy, but not necessarily Donovan.

What?
FWIW, I don’t think we’ve ever hired a first choice guy. Cal was the third guy we interviewed. Pitino was 3rd or 4th. Others interviewed during Tubby’s search.
The only guy who had NC game experience was Cal. Tubby had been to three Sweet 16s between Tulsa and Georgia. Pitino was an assistant under Hubie Brown at the Knicks when we hired him.

He’s good friends with Mitch Barnhart.

My god. This would be glorious

He is a legend at Baylor and they have serious booster money when it's motivated to spend, which they clearly are to keep him. I'm not too surprised he's staying

Frank Vogel could emerge, he's a Kentucky guy.

No one thinks they go after Bruce Pearl?

The chip Gaines trash talk on Twitter was hilarious though

Yeah his name came up this morning in a couple of places.
Of course Donovan has too but we’d have to wait on him finishing his season with the Bulls which could be next week depending on how games go.
Others that have come up depending how things go are Shaka Smart, Bruce Pearl, Sean Miller.

Billy is 58? How was he at Florida? 12?

Why does everyone keep saying this? They've had two 1 seeds and two 3 seeds in the last four years including a championship.
Kentucky's last Final Four was in 2015. Since then, they've had two Elite Eight exits, one Sweet Sixteen exit, two second round exits, and two first round exits with one missed tournament.
Baylor in that same time frame: one National Championship, two Sweet Sixteen exits, three second round exits, and one first round exit with one missed tournament.
Those are extremely comparable and only one has a championship. It wasn't Kentucky who is constantly bringing in a top two recruiting class. Drew has had as much if not more success with what is perceived as less talent. That would indicate he's a better coach.

Are these upgrades from Calipari?

I mean, Cal hasn’t made it out of the first weekend in 5 years and hasn’t won a SEC title since 2020.
When Cal’s years were good, they were really good. But the last 5 years have been pretty putrid. And it wasn’t because we didn’t have talent.

There are only 17 ever to win multiple national championships. I believe 7 active have 1 and only 3 active have 2.
So the list of schools with more National Championships than Baylor since 2015 is Villanova and UConn.

The biggest goat frick would be hiring a guy who isn’t big enough for the job. Kentucky will hire a good coach, can Louisville say the same?

The point is Drew has a worse resume than Cal.
