I would to see my mortgage statement at the end of the year with rising insurance rates in Louisiana plus increased property taxes due to no income tax. This shite will be more than my principal.

No, Mr Politician. You figure that out NOW.

Eliminate income tax, cut spending by a like amount, and allow local cities / parishes to dedcide if they want to pick up the slack in spending and raise property taxes to pay for it.

If you're making in excess of a couple of hundred thousand a year, this sounds great.

But if Grandma is living off a pension and/or social security, her property tax, vehicle permits, handicap tag, and sales tax will hurt her.

If property taxes rise, even non-government assisted renters will be effected when their rates go up.

The state is going to collect money in some kind of fashion.

First off I don't have any answers and I'm not an expert, just someone who lives in Louisiana and pays a good bit of taxes. It seems like the state has very ambitious plan most of which stop taxes (eliminating break tags, concealed weapons permits, and personal income taxes) while wanting to give money away for private schools and turning down some fed money (which most of it has dem strings tied to it). I don't see how they can reduce the money the state takes in without reducing our spending. And if you think reducing tax breaks is the answer, those benefiting from those tax breaks (who are also big donors to the politicians) will claim that it will kill businesses

How about we shut the state government down for a year. Send everyone home, pay no taxes. Come back in a year and see if anyone really notices.
Roads are fricked up already, let local governments take on the responsibilities that the state fricks up on a regular basis.

Until the government can legitimately point to how they are owed anything by my labor and the sweat of my brow, income tax is complete horseshite.

I do not support this one bit. Rent will go up for renters because landlords will pass the higher cost down, mortgage notes will go up for homeowners, and people will spend less. Louisiana is not a state that can get away with something like this like Texas, Florida, and Tennessee can. We’re full of uneducated residents and this will backfire.

I hate this idea here in Louisiana.

Edited to clarify mortgage notes - not rates.

Brandon is lying again

Considering how low the income tax is and how much it pays for, this is just silly.

No chance. This is clearly what they SHOULD do to compete with Texas.
But you will need tax revenue, so the other taxes will have to be increased (property tax); but more significantly, they will have to be firm.
That is, no more corporate welfare through the tax code.
And these legislators simply will not go for that. They love their special tax breaks because it keeps their campaign coffers full. Never mind that it does very little to attract new business (because most are given to entrenched businesses like chemical plants).
