Do scholarships even matter anymore?

I'm just thinking about the investigation at Michigan and sanctions against Florida State and thinking we should be on top now because we dont have those issues, but does it even matter? With NIL, they can just pay the kids an extra +$ whatever to cover the cost of a scholarship... so in theory, you have as many scholarships as money you can fork out now.

Athletic Scholarships still matter

How though? Would 2025 commits decommit from us if we replaced their scholarship with additional income that surpassed the value of the scholarship?
.. and if they can't touch NIL, then does the NCAA really have the power to discipline anyone anymore already?

Being a scholarship football player comes with all sorts of perks…those departments/staffs are limited.
But yea, Ole Miss’ kicker last year was on ‘full NIL’ while the scholarship kid sat the bench.
Coaches equate ‘full NIL’ with scholarships, but I still think you’d rather be a scholarship football player.

Hunter Dean was a walk on this past season even though everyone assumed he was on scholarship. Pretty sure he got covered through NIL

I have no idea, but they probably wouldn't like it. Football teams can have 85 scholarship players so you are basically telling them they are at the bottom of that list of 85.

I think the total cost of a scholarship could be more than 100k, for football, not sure..80 something..Gordon has a bunch of money..but for all the sports, that's a ton of money, I'll still take the scholarships from the N-C-2-A

It is absolutely amazing that people still can't grasp that schools aren't paying players NIL.

Yes.
NIL is taxable. No elite player is trading money for a full scholarship.
You might could get a preferred walk-on to come with some NIL.

While this is true, it's not the whole truth. Coaching staffs set up meetings with collectives, negotiate the parameters of the deals and ultimately decide to meet or not meet demands. Those are facts and it's disingenuous to proclaim innocence on behalf of the coaching staffs and schools. They are both complicit in any NIL deal related to recruiting. "Signing bonuses" are what most people call them. No way the staffs and schools aren't privy to what deals are made, offered or turned down. If so, they are failing at their job and they aren't winning anything.
The fact that gymnastics are performed to manipulate the money and where it comes from is the easy part to accept. That's gone on for years.

How about just understand the benefits of a full paid athletic scholarship?

They sure as hell do for non-P5 football and basketball players who are mostly backups, as it helps them afford a college education if they take care of their academic business. It also matters for vast majority of non-revenue sport athletes, majors and mid-majors alike, for the same exact reason.

They simply matter for all athletic programs which makes the post certifiably insane.
