I still like Time After Time better than anything Madonna ever did

Madonna and its not even close. You could make a better case for Paula Abdul as number 2 then Cyndi Lauper.
Madonna was one of the biggest stars of the 80s regardless of sex. I’d say the closest female artist would be Whitney Houston.

Lauper. She could actually sing when she stopped channeling the "little girl" voice.

Always hated Madonna

Madonna was massive at the time. As someone said, she had a ton of #1's back then. Lauper was known, but nowhere on the level of Madonna.
Of course, she went full retard in her later years and needs to just disappear at this point.

Lauper had the better voice and a wider selection of solid pop songs.
She could deliver live.
I do think Madonna was very talented.

Lauper was a legit songwriter and had something to say. She may have leaned into her quirky personality, but ultimately, I think that was largely just who she was.
Madonna monetized being a whore (NTTAWWT), with very little in the way of accompanying talent.
One of those is easier to admire.

Crazy For You > Time After Time
Maybe (Crazy For You is my favorite Madonna song), but that was written for Vision Quest and they just picked her because they liked her vocals on Borderline (that's how early that was for Madonna), which is my second favorite with those 2 being the only ones I'll seek out or listen to voluntarily.,
Lauper wrote Time After Time with the blonde dude from The Hooters.
There is a marked difference in the talent between even prime Madonna and Lauper. Madonna arguably a slightly better singer, but she demonstrated no other musical talent. Lauper can play several instruments and wrote/cowrote many of her songs.

Taylor would be a massive pop star in the 80s but she’d be part of a much more crowded field, including Madonna.
If you didn’t grow up in the 80s it’s hard to describe all the good bands and music coming from every direction and genre.
I took my wife to Madonna last month and was pleasantly surprised she still has it and is very entertaining (yea she’s had a ton of work lol).

Cyndi is just so quirky and fun.
I kind of enjoy the video for Money Changes Everything.

Seek out the vid of Cyndi live in Paris. Rick Derringer on guitar. The band and the show is fire and changed my opinion of CL.

Lauper is multi-talented. She can sing rock, blues, jazz or American standards and do them well.
