Thoughts on a talica for fishing snapper, Aj’s, grouper in 300’ of water. Looking at model
TAC20IICAM .
45lbs of drag and can hold lots of 80-100 lb braid.

It will definitely get the job done.

We sold our Talica’s and purchased Penn Torque Lever drag 2-speed reels for AJ’s.
We switched over to spinning reels a few years ago for snaps due to the line retrieval. It’s easier to reel in numerous drops and not have to worry about leveling the line on a conventional reel. Plus they’re lighter outfits and easier to hold.

Talica’s are fantastic reels, about top of the line. If you are in Louisiana fishing steel then a 20 maybe best but generally I’d say that size is overkill for snapper.
I love spinners but the one issue with a spinner is they are high speed and if you are fishing for big sows over steel it’s really nice to have a low speed reel/ 2 speed option to gain some line by just winching them in on that first bite.
Give that, if you have a larger spinner with 30-45+ lbs of drag it’s rare snapper will take much drag

shite after last year I'm thinking about getting downriggers. I'm rewiring my boat right now and I pulled some extra cables to the gunnels just in case.

Get tanacom 1000s/or banax and never look back. Run 2 off the back no way id be fishing at a rig with a spinner in 300 foot LOL unless mangrove fising or casting for cobia. Some times the current is so bad off venice you need well over a pound of weight just to get down to the bottom. What most ppl dont understand especially the bay boat crowd using 2 egg weights and not catching crap. While were burning them up on electrics with heavy weight. Its definitely a cheat code I will never go back to conventional for bottom fishing. Unless dropping for warsaw or AJS your toast on a spinner if you hook a Warsaw. Save energy for tuna fishing at the floaters catch a limit and roll south.

Talica’s are top of the line shimano. Overkill for snapper IMO. You could easily get away with a 16 if you wanted. 20 would be fine. If ya got the cash go for it. I have a combo on Penn fathoms and shimano tekatos and have been happy with either. Have caught several AJs on the fathoms
I’ll second what was mentioned about electrics although I do feel like it’s cheating

Penn Fathom is what I use. Great compromise between price and performance. My buddy uses tekatos and those are really nice but I think they cost a fair bit more. I felt like I had my monies worth out of my fathoms a long time ago and still haven't had to open either of them up in like 8 years.

TAC 20 is definitely overkill for snapper lol, but yeah it will work. You could also tuna fish and wahoo fish with it.

I use Talica 12’s for snapper. I have a couple 20’s for light tuna but could be good for bottom fishing.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I know people complain about sharks every year but last year was noticeably worse. Lost count of the number of big snapper that we lost to sharks.
That is why I am upgrading so I can get the snapper up quickly.
