In what way?

I have to imagine a lot of this is like the social media-based narcissism where "we want him to enjoy it for as long as possible" is really "we want to enjoy watching him enjoy it for as long as possible". Like I bet the mom is worried she won't get to do Elf on a Shelf this year and, more specifically, won't be able to post pics from doing it.

5th grade is really old to be believing in that stuff, especially today.

You're right. In 5th grade, he should be searching for porn in the internet. In 5th grade, he's practically an adult. He's way too old to be innocent anymore.

Or perhaps she wants to keep the innocence of him for as long as possible. These are memories that she can't recreate with him (grandkids of course but not her kids).

The only people who have the right to tell the kids about Santa and whatever else are the parents of the kid.
