Is there any dynamic between Houston and A&M fans?

Or are they far enough apart that there isn’t a rivalry?

Probably hasn’t been a rivalry in 30 years

They haven’t been in the same conference since the 90s, but there is huge overlap socially and in the workplace in the Houston metro between aggies and UH grads.

If there is one at all it probably didn't make it to Memphis

UH alumni hate all things UT and A&M (the superior, A-level Texas schools) while UT and A&M folks look down their noses at UH (commuter school with improving reputation).
That’s the dynamic.
That’s the dynamic.

quote:Exactly. Houston and A&M last played against each other regularly when the Southwest Conference disbanded in 1996. A&M, Texas, Texas Tech, & Baylor went to the Big XII. Houston went to CUSA (1996–2013), then AAC (2013–2023) & to the Big XII in 2023. Houston joined the Southwest Conference in 1972. They were in a conference together for about 24 years.

Great freaking OT game tonight!

Most of my friends from school with Houston roots are now rooting for UH, either because they have a grad degree/family connnection there or simply because it would be cool for the city if they won a title. There’s probably some animosity for older grads who were around during the SWC but absolutely zero from the Big 12/SEC generation

i mean this with absolutely no harshness or ill will...
but i don't think A&M or UT think about UH outside of an athletic event. Even then, it's just referring to UH as Cougar High.
It's like UNT. A perfectly fine/good school, but, as you put it, a regional "commuter school."

Is Houston becoming a better college overall? I never knew anything about U of H, but basically the consensus amongst Houston people I knew, was that U of H was kinda your last option type of thing.

i've never felt that dynamic in academics for Texas.
A crap ton of dentists, optometrists, and Drs went there for med school instead of Baylor, TAMU, UT, etc.

The Houston fans are not members of a cult so that’s unlikely.

UH is not a bad school at all, and it’s a great option for professional grad degrees for Houston residents (which a lot of my friends from A&M and other schools went there for). It does have the commuter school rep, and they are working hard to shake it. I think having good athletics helps create that campus feel for sure. More so for UH they need the area around it to improve to create a true campus feel which might be tough.

UH is a fair school in its own right
Its still working to get rid of the commuter label but it's a quality school

A point of clarification:
UT has a med school and dental school in Houston.
U of H has a pharmacy school and Optometry school in Houston. I think U of H is opening a med school (not sure if open yet). Edit: looks like the first small class started in 2020.
So people who go to dent school or med school in Houston were actually in the UT system (unless med school at BCM which only shares a name with BU at this point).
It’s confusing.

I drove through there recently. It surprised me. One side of campus looked like it was bordering a gentrifying area that still had about 50% of buildings looking horrible.
The other side had mansions next to a big ditch. One of them had a brightly colored Rolls Royce out front.
Seems like an odd part of town.

i'm open to being corrected on that. but i will say i'm a bit ignorant on med schools in Texas.
now that you say that, i know an unusual number of optometrists which probably skews my . I'm in Temple and Baylor Scott and White has a large eye institute and I go to church with a ton of them and they all seemed to have gone to UH.

It its a good academic school, below UT and A&M, but better than other public options in Texas.
Being a commuter school is what hurts it the most.
