I "taught" myself to play bass and guitar by playing power chords using my index and pinky fingers. As a result, my ring finger is relatively underdeveloped. Since I'm self-taught, I also sustained the bad habit of lazily resting my palm on the back of the fretboard. I haven't found the will to unteach myself the habit.

I might can help with this one: start using your thumb over the top. It unglues your fretting hand.

I was the same way. I bought one of those finger exercise things and it helped me build up dexterity.

I glued a thin strip of wood on the center of the back of the fretboard of an old bass. Helped me train my thumb to not go up past a certain point. It's crazy how much speed and clarity come from just moving your hand down a bit.

I have big hands and long-ish fingers, so I didn't need to use my pinky as much for certain things on the guitar that other people with smaller hands were forced to, and I think it cost me as I advanced to more technical stuff.

I also was just never really interested in learning solos. My favorite songs have great, memorable rhythm guitar riffs... so thats what I learned to play. I would be a much better guitarist if I learned more solos and thus more ways to practically utilize scales.

bad habit

I tune the batter and reso heads on my toms to the exact same frequency for maximum resonance. This sometimes causes a sympathetic hum that drives FOH engineers crazy.

I am trying to use my pinky finger more on my fretting hand. Not because what I’m doing is wrong, but because it could help me do more.

As far as technique, there is no wrong one. If it works, it works. I’ve seen some of the best players in the world using what some know-it-all on YouTube or in some classroom would say is all wrong.

I have certain chord progressions that I gravitate towards as well as a few common styles of guitar solos I play. I’m not typically a lead guitarist, so soloing isn’t a skill I really work at developing.

My worst habits are in my singing. I have a tendency to get carried away on stage. Sometimes, this results in me doing extra things with my voice with improper technique that can damage it or randomly mashing songs together in ways that weren’t previously rehearsed,

When I play acoustic a lot of times I’ll just lay my pointer finger accross the second fret to play my A, it’s just being lazy and always regret when I do it, sounds so much better fingered the right way.

I sing harmonies in the car. Hell, I learned how to play a tamborine with my right hand... driving with my left hand. Great way. What ever comes on .. sing harmony, play tambourine...

Better that stearing wheele snare and cymbals, dashboard toms, and gas pedal kich drum.

I think most guitar players are the same way to an extent.
It was like I was glued to Em forever.
When I started learning to pick with my thumb and fingers, I wanted to learn to do a lot of walking bass notes and Am seems better for that, so now I'm playing out of Am most of the time.

Tune your bottom E string down a full step.
You can also tune your B string down 1/2 step, then when you're fretting those bottom 4 strings at the 2nd fret you're really playing in Am.
You can do some really folky/jazzy shuffles out of that position that sound great, even though you're really not doing much at all.
I've started feeling guilty about it.

I always like the songs that I write, when I'm driving down the road the best.
