But I figured Shand and Jones would get a lot of snaps inside, particularly on passing downs
People assumed they would play inside because we are tremendously thin and under talented at that position…and those 2 are the most likely to try and fill that gap.
Assuming it is a solution to the problem is nothing more than hope.
DT is currently a disaster. It needs to be addressed before fall.

Serious question. How would you appraise the inside DL this past season? Maason Smith IMO was a monster his TR FR season but didn't remotely attain that form in his RS SO season. Wingo we all think I believe was very good when healthy but last year had that injury hidden most of the season.
Do you expect the DT / inside DL to be better, the same, worse than last year? Once again, I'm talking actual play on the field.

Michael Brockers was a strong side DE out of high school and ended up being a first round draft choice at DT. I'm sure our coaches know better than 99% of the rant who to play where and how to coach them. Our fans are a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks who don't know shite but think they know everything.

He’s not moving to DT.
The SDE position—as was mentioned in the announcement—will play a 4i technique, which is within the B-gap. But this is not the same as a 3-tech DT or a 0-shade NT.

Good he is a Bull. He was never able to set the edge. He looked like his head was down and did not move laterally very well. Was able to move up the field just not very good moving laterally/not quick side to side.

That is cool that some people love using buzz words and coach speak about gap this and technique that. I'm not being sarcastic, but quite frankly what I care about is inside DL or playing on the end of the DL. IMO, the use of terms has gotten way overused. Now, the new DC has come up with "star" as a new football word. Football is tackling and blocking along the LOS...that is it.
The bottom line in general: Interior DL are bigger, slower, and are more efficient at stopping the run and less of a pass rusher. Outside DL (EDGE, DE, whatever) are lighter, faster, and are supposed to contain and rush the passer more.

We are worse than last year by a lot.

If things don’t change it will be much worse.

I don't know honestly. If Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo had been remotely healthy, you are definitely right. But there is some point were a 100% healthy inferior player = a 70% healthy more talented player. I'm reserving judgment due to actually having healthy players and perhaps the bigger factor...having an actual, qualified, healthy DL coach. Having the hired DL coach out for the season didn't help any.

You aren’t getting a “monster” anything out the portal at this time of the year

t Brian Kelly in his media session mentioned Jones potentially moving inside saying he wasn't necessarily an edge guy.
This was very obvious last year often when a QB would break containment. I don't know if there was one single time that he came close to keep a QB from getting the corner.

Nothing about the defensive line is ideal, but having Bo Davis will absolutely lead to significant improvement in play since last year. At the very least, they won’t get shoved back 5 yards at every snap.

You’ve completely misunderstood what Kelly was saying. He said he’s a 4 tech which is NOT at DT.

Question is hard to answer right now but let’s just say that LSU lands the Indiana DT and another transfer of similar skill/experience and Dom McKinley is ready to contribute week 1 like maason was. Then I’d say we’d be better than we were last year

This team gets off on dropping their back shoulder and hitting pop ups.

Jefferson was 10x better than what we have. For the disappointment of Smith, he’s way better than what we have.
You are delusional.

Yeah, I didn't mention him but I should have. I think 10 times is obviously hyperbole but PFF did grade him out as the highest performance rated DL. If I had to pick one of those three to come back...Wingo, Smith, and Jefferson, I would pick JJ.
As far as "delusional", we will see. I'm taking more of a wait and see attitude, because since you brought up Jefferson, he was a starter at West Virginia but I sure don't remember him being touted pre-season of being LSU's best interior DL.

From what I saw from our DE's, nobody took time to teach them what an 'edge' is. Hope he can bulk up and dominate with a relentless motor.

Great. That doesn’t mean they will be any good there a camp and a half of practices at this position. This isn’t necessarily a fix. Could just be a bad bandaid.
Pat yourself on the back like it’s fixed and there is no cause for concern but it’s anything but.

Isn’t Bo Davis supposed to be one of the best in the business? He is going to have to be next year. We will have to trust him.

So the guy that would argue with a brick wall calls out someone for arguing with a brick wall.
That is almost like someone calling themselves NotaStarGazer and creating their own star system.
Your 10 minutes are up.
