I have a question for the board. Is Johnny Cash a good singer? I mean do you believe his vocals is what got him famous, or was it his songwriting and storytelling? Or was it just only his image?
The reason I ask this is because I heard people say that he can't sing and they don't understand why he got so famous.
Do you think the critics are correct that he can't sing? Or maybe they have no idea what they are talking about?

I would rather listen to him than many of this board's favorites, such as:
Geddy Lee
Robert Plant
Brad Delp
And many others listed in the Best Singers thread

His voice is distinctive, he’s a good singer and songwriter.

His voice type is that of a bass-baritone which means he is a low baritone that can dip into some bass notes.
Joaquin Phoenix said that he struggled to sing like Cash because he couldn't hit his lower notes until one day after much practice he did.

Cash wrote Ring of Fire.

All three of those are tenors and excel at the higher octaves and just so much different than the voice of Cash who is much better hitting the lower octaves.

He may not be technically great but when you hear his voice you by God stop and listen to what he’s saying. You can’t help it.

It was the whole package. Nobody sounded like he did, and his voice was perfect for his songs. You believed every word. And yes, he was a great writer.

It's not always about having a good singing voice. Many times it's about a good SOUNDING voice that is unique. Cash isn't a good singer, but he has such an interesting sounding voice that sucks you in. Billy Corgan is another example.
What separates Cash is his songwriting ability and melody creations, and his unique voice adds to that. John Prine falls into this category as well.

John Prine is criminally under- appreciated.

Yes but according to his first wife Vivian, Cash told her it was his idea with Merle Kilgore and that he wanted to give June Carter half credit since she was in some financial trouble.

absolutely. Growing up I was unfamiliar with him yet knew a lot of his songs due to them often being covered. In my adult years I finally discovered him, and what a treasure he is.

Yes
His voice fits his message. Its not smooth, but its not supposed to be.

Cash only took three voice lessons. His instructor told he had no need for anymore voice lessons.

I disagree.
Cash is a good singer with a low baritone voice that conveys his sad, serious and depressing songs.
How many do you see in country music or in other genres that could sing like Cash? The only other I can think of is Josh Turner who due to his deep voice was able to dominate country music for a short period of time.
Those type of voices are unique as they aren't as common as other voice types.

and he was in a bad publishing deal.
Ol' Merle has credit on quite a few great songs.

Apparently Vivian didn't like June Carter.
