My cousin now has me doubting that a 60 will be adequate for my 18x54. It's just me, wife, and 5yr old... I think the 60 should be enough

My boat is the same size, side console and custom made so thicker/heavier. I can run low to mid 40s in it. That 60 will push it fine.

I have that exact motor and it’s a tank. Will piss mud and never miss a beat. Not as fast as a merc but very dependable.

Love my 60hp tohatsu. The only downside to the thing is it’s kinda loud. I’ll be rolling with this guy until the prop falls off.

Friend of mine has been a boat motor mechanic since 1986 in Louisiana. He 100% believes in them says they put out more power than the Merc & Yamaha, better warranty. I can't offer anything additional.
I went Yamaha for service/parts closer to the house. The 60 should serve you well on your boat but if it's rated for more....buy once cry once!

I grew up on the coast in south texas and never heard of Tohatsu until I moved to SWLA in the 90s. On any day in March that's almost all you'll see in the Lacassine Pool and that's all I know about them. Dem baws love them some Tohatsus.

I built my boat, so it's full .125 hull, but is pretty much open. So I don't think it's too heavy and that 60 should do fine.

Doubt that ever happens, their bread and butter motors are 140hp and under.
I can still wish right? Love that new 140 but I need more HP

I use them on my catfish seining boats. They get abused badly by a bunch of 9 dollar an hour imbeciles and rarely give us trouble. I had Yamahas that wouldn’t last a month.
Solid quality motors

I’ll put it this way my seine crew sinks the boat at least once every few weeks and the Tohatsu 40 goes under.
I just pull the plugs and dry them and take the intake manifold off and blow the water out of the cylinders. Put it together and have it running in a hour. They’re indestructible

i have the 1752 with tohatsu mfs40 and it does 33 mph with just me and it has no performance issues even when fully loaded. i guess i could go bigger but why? i dont need to go over 35mph in a boat any way
that 60 is overpowering your flatboat for what it needs, but some idiots put 70hp or even 90hp on them

Well, hearing that's what you use at the farm and they keep on ticking is quite a testament! I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it.
Thanks everyone for all the responses

Back in the mid 90’s to around mid 2000 my dad’s best friend had a 40 hp tohatsu. It was a tank. Abused with little maintenance and I don’t remember any real issues with it. I never owned one but I wouldn’t hesitate to put one that they build themselves on one of my boats. I know that isn’t recent history but it made an impression on me.
For the record my dad’s friend upgraded boats and has gone thru 2 Honda 150’s in 14 years. He is currently seeing if he can ruin Yamahas reputation with his new 150 he got last year lol

As noted in my annoying Gatortail thread I am no boat expert but my best friend is the definition of river rat and swamp monster. He has a Tohatsu (I think 40 or 50)on an open xpress with a middle bench compartment a 16/52 (IIRC) hull and that boat is fast and we have pulled some pretty big cypress out of the river with it with no problem.
He has had it for a few years and has some older Mercurys and other engines he has used before and he swears by the Tohatsu, fwiw. He is the type that would be right at home with y'all knowledgable boat folks on here so I just thought I would throw that out there if you were on the fence. To each their own but it is a great motor, that one at least.

That's old Evinrude Johnson, 9.5 hp motor tough. Can't tell you how many times we ran our Evinrude hot or forgot to put oil in tank. Engine froze, pulled plugs dried and or oiled cylinders with WD-40 pulled it and it cranked back up no problem.

Do it! I’m planning to do the same either a tohatsu or Suzuki. 90 on a 1854. We run 45 mins to the hunting grounds

Best small outboards made today in my opinion have had 4 and the only issue so far is the key cover doesn’t last very long.
