This is the man you should be listening too. A commercial operator is more knowledgeable and concerned more about reliability.

Yep, and all the other positive responses. The fella is bringing the motor to town on Monday for me to see. Pretty sure I'll be pulling the trigger on it

Coming in late, I have a tohatsu 60 and I've had it for 4 years now.

I don't have anything to compare it with as it's my first boat, but here's my take.

1. The fuel pump is very weak. This made the break in period awful for me because it felt like the engine kept dying. In reality, with the way the fuel line and ant-siphon was set up, the engine was just starving.
2. Parts and diagrams are hard to find. I don't know if this is global for all manufacturers.
3. Service is really hard to find. The guy I take it to in Harahan is awesome but always busy as hell.
4. Combining 3 + 2 means it's hard to service DIY.

All that said, again, I have nothing to compare it to. But I keep it maintained and it runs fine all the time. It's really fuel efficient too. I don't care about hole shot, so I go with the 17' diameter prop and I can cruise at about 37mph with it.

Hope that all helps.

I had a 1990 40HP Tohatsu for over 20 years. Great engines. Tohatsu was the oldest marine engine manufacturer in Japan but they were bought out by Nissan about the time of that engine I had. Smaller engines were Tohatsu's, the large engines were made by Nissan.

That was a two stroke, though.

It's a 2022 model with around 50hrs, and 2.5 yrs of warranty left. He's asking 6500.

That seems like a good price but I don't know what they go for new anymore. I would not hesitate to have another Tohatsu.

At 6500, I don't think it's a steal by any means. But it's a friend of a friend, and he's a young, hard-working guy getting his life going, so I don't mind paying a fair price to him for the motor. Didn't even bother trying to talk him down from 6500. If it's as clean as the pics he sent me, I'm gonna buy it.

For 7 years I have never had an issue with my Mercury 40hp which are made by Tohatsu.
