Best Non Buckshot Self Defense Load?

I am modifying my 20 gauge that I made into a legal sawed off mod many years ago. I want to put a tactical stock on it to begin with. It shoots 3" magnum loads and finding buckshot is impossible. I can find some 2 3/4" buckshot, but it is expensive.

Federal flight control seems to be a fave
I’ve heard 4 is good. But I bought rio Low recoil on the cheep and I’m rolling with it on all my shotguns.
But the videos covering the subject are all over the place. No one can really settle on the load. They seems to suggest buck.
and I suppose issue number one is that you are head and shoulders above the populace by having a gun. That’s really it.

TSS, killed a hog at crazy distance during Turkey season, and thought I missed, cause it was in heavy brush and tall grass, and didn’t see it run off, didn’t hear a thing, no grass around it moving…. Went over there and it was stone cold dead. Don’t know about home defense, or damage of the collateral things, etc, but was impressed.

Federal tactical flite control low recoil buckshot is the tits. It's incredible. Keep shopping and find some. Totally worth it.

Get the 2 3/4 buckshot. Make sure it patterns and functions well.
Load your gun with that for self defense.
If you don’t want to spend the money for practice or target blasting, get some cheaper shite for that.

Before I spent money on a tacticool stock I would spend it on some buckshot.
High brass number 6 shot will be pretty devastating at most distances in a home.

I would imagine just about any 12 gauge load would be pretty devastating in a house. If you hit an intruder at that close range, they’re getting the full load, wad included.

What are you talking about? There’s plenty of buckshot available for 20 gauge for very reasonable prices. You’re not shooting a round of skeet with it. You also don’t need 3” but if you do, academy has 3” 3 buck available.

My local Academy only has 2.75" buckshot at $2.00 a round.
I do have a box or two of bird and squirrel shot. What I have loaded now is a combination of buckshot and birdshot.

Bird shot is for birds. Use buckshot for self defense.

That’s perfectly adequate. Buy a couple of boxes and call it a day.
$2.00 a shell is expensive if you’re duck hunting. It’s not expensive when you only need a handful of shells. Also, the best non buckshot load is going to be TSS and it’s a heck of a lot more expensive than $2 a shell.

I agree and my 12ga sits with a buckshot-slug-buckshot combo.
I wouldn’t feel undergunned shooting a crack head at 15ft with high brass number 6 though

#4 buck used to be the accepted "in the house" load. But everyone is right that it won't matter at close range. I have photos on my phone of a dude that took a load of birdshot in his side at 10 ft from a sawed off shotgun in a bar parking lot. It made one big hole in his chest wall. Kilt him right there. Cop friend shared the photo with me. Probably should delete come to think of it.

Do not use tss for self defense unless you have to. It can have total pass throughs at crazy range.
It can go through every wall in your house.

I had a classmate that was killed by his Dad while hunting dove's with birdshot.

#2 steel shot magnums. Not cheap, but available and will get the job done.

#4 (or #1 if you can find it) 2¾ Buck, out of a 20 ga, is fine for home defense.
A 20 ga slug will do it as well.
Birdshot/squirrel shot .... no. Turkey shot, I dunno, maybe if you can find lead Turkey shot in 20 ga 3" mags ... maybe.
