GT putting in "run and shoot" prior to bowl game...(LINK)

This is an element of Paul Johnson's offense he used heavily at Hawaii where he had the 4th leading passer in Hawaii history...and then at GaSouthern were Tracy Ham threw for 5,000 yds and ran for 3,000 yds.
He never could get his Navy team past the option running game because of talent. Thus far, he has tried to throw some of it in at GT but has not had time because the option was not being run correctly. It is still too slow...and he mentions in this article that we still do not run the option well (Navy is much faster at it)...but he wants to start working on the passing game now...not wait until spring.
Whether we see it in the bowl game remains to be seen.
btw...this isn't a "we are going to beat you" thread or anything...just passing along information because you guys seem to actually understand football and like to talk about it.

looks like smoke and mirrors to me.
trying to throw LSU off concentrating on their running game.

I agree. Why would they have a major change of offense before the bowl game? Makes no sense. They'll probably come out and just run triple option all game anyways.

You have probably not watched a ton of GT football this year...so this is understandable. We only run the TO about 15 plays per game. We run the toss sweep out of the I about 15 times as well. Then...throw in a little mid-line option...a bit of the freeze option...a few plays of the lead option. Sometimes we just run a straight dive...or QB keeper.
We threw for 250 against Duke...but that was the only game where our new OL has been able to pass protect.
We are just not that good at the TO yet. Navy kicks our butt at it.
...and the run and shoot stuff is run out of our same base formation. Remember....our AB's are positioned close to the line...almost like 2 TE's...they just become receivers on the pass plays often times, giving us 4 WR's.

Looks like we have an informative.

I've watched every GT game. I'm a GT fan. GT plays out of Flexbone formation the entire game and runs primarily triple option giving it the B-Back, the QB keeping it behind the B-Back or a pitch to one of the A-Backs.
It just makes no sense to install such a vastly different offensive idea in a months time. Does GT really think they can't beat LSU just running it after doing just that to Georgia?

I think GT should really get away from what they've been doing seven out of the last eight games.
It's the only fair thing to do, since we've decided to convert to the 3-4 for this game.

Watch football 101 with paul johnson on youtube...
LINK
he runs his run and shoot stuff out of the same base formation...he may just change some motions.
Regarding the TO...Paul Johnson has said himself time and again we have run very little TO this year...and even in this video he says about 10-15 times per game. Heck...we ran it 8-10 times in our opener this year.
It may appear that he called the TO...but he may have called a dive that play and not given our QB the option to keep it at all...or a QB keeper with no option to give it to the BB.
Regarding the toss sweep out of the I....you saw that time and again with Roddy Jones this year...and others. (and it notes this before the season in Football 101). We are in our base flexbone formation with the AB's tight behind the OT's....then he sends one in motion and the ball is snapped when the AB is directly behind the BB. What formation are we in when it is snapped??... The I formation. The only difference...the D had to be balanced prior to the play as we were in a base alignment that was balanced...and our AB got a running start on the pitch instead of coming from a standstill out of the I.
I too would say it is unlikely to see much of it in the bowl game...but he is starting to build the plan for spring practice and beyond. That is why we are signing two tall receivers this year (Stephen Hill at 6-5, 200 and Jeremy Moore at 6-3, 200)...and we graduate zero receivers. Plus...he did a home visit in Louisiana tonight to try and get Ricky Johnson from Arkansas to use as an AB..and WR.

I would think it would be just a few plays, not an entire offense and probably nothing too fancy. I could see it. It would be a nice wrinkle for them.

Right, it's not an entire new offense. Just adding more passing plays than are already there. Johnson's offense evolved from running the option out of the double-slot Run and Shoot, and the passing game has always been based on the 'Shoot.

For what it is worth, Coach Johnson said the exact same thing at the Coach's luncheon yesterday. Actually, I think it was the first comment he made, which struck me as odd. Smoke screen if you ask me, it just seems odd that he would be so public with your strategy.

Well..it isn't a strategy...it is just a play. Just like the Triple Option is not an offense...it is a play in the spread option that is run 10-15 times per game.
He has been talking about putting more 'run and shoot' in simce last spring. We have worked on it in practice...many of which were public with tons of coaches present (high school, college, and NFL...including Belichick who sends his staff to two Paul Johnson practices every year). We have already tried plays out of it many times in live games this year...matter of fact Roddy Jones (AB) caught some long passes in the seams out of it.
What limits throwing it more than 10-12 times per game right now is blocking...it is just not there yet. Matter of fact, we often times attempted passes 5-7 times more than you see in the game stats...but Nesbitt had to take off running instead.

I have seen GT play several times this year, and they almost run a multiple offense with multiple formations. Yes, they do have the triple option, but that is really only one facet of their offense. They can throw the ball out of different formations and they are not afraid to pound the rock up the middle either. If LSU is only thinking triple option, it is going to be a VERY LONG night December 31.

He has actually been very open about his appreciation for a good passing game to complement his option. As has been said, he runs it out of the same base formation. If you look at his old GA Southern teams as OC, especially with Tracy Hamm at QB (mid-80's), and as OC at Hawaii (late 80's/early 90's), you'll see it. He has said that he never threw it much at GA Southern as a HC in the late 90's because he didn't have to, and at Navy because he couldn't really do it. So the question is: Do you have the guys at GA Tech to do it? Answer = yes.
We have a few nice WR's, and Josh Nesbitt threw for over 5000 yards in HS, IIRC.
This is just the first installment of the package. He has said that he didn't even get to the point where he could install it this fall, as he had to get the base option offense in. Adding the R&S was to be his spring task, but I guess he's getting a jump start on it in bowl practices. We also have a few nice WR's we are recruiting, and this may be a chance to impress them about his ultimate intentions.

If he says anything like "it'll take three years to install my system" you better watch out and make sure he's never written any books like Complete Triple Optioning.

I've always liked Paul Johnson. Anyone who could make Navy a winner has my respect. Plus your offense is fun to watch: you're the only ACC team whose games I watched this season. Naturally I hope LSU wins, but here's to a good game.

Why not? If your D coordinator takes the same attitude as you and you don't prepare for our passing game, seems you are in trouble if we do and can pass. If you do prepare more for our passing then you prepare less for our rushing. My impression of Johnson is he doesn't lie. But you believe what you want.

Actually both the Navy fans and GSU fans who have come to our board since his hire, say that I will take until next year for us to get to where we need to be. Everything after that will be based on the personnel that we have.
It is amazing how many fans of former schools follow and root for us now.

Ga Tech beat vaunted Georgia in a game that nobody thought that they could win.
Next, Ga Tech will beat LSU in a game that EVERYBODY thinks that they will win.
This is a good time to be a Ga Tech fan.
