From what I understand, getting the Ranger tab is not the same as "being" a Ranger. I have heard Rangers explain it but I guess what they are trying to say is that people who serve in the Ranger regiments did a lot more than just getting the tab.

Correct I was tabbed not scrolled. Which means I was technical "Ranger Qualified". In my unit (82nd) there were lots of tabbed Rangers and they were generally referred to as simply Rangers but everyone knew it meant they were Ranger Qualified. On the opposite end, you have non-Ranger Qualified soldiers serving in Ranger regiments, it has become more rare especially now that they are used in more direct action than in the past but it does exist.

Most every new private (E-1 to Spec4) to Regiment/Battalion is going to be non-tabbed. This is the backbone of Regiment. Being an untabbed private in Ranger Regiment may be the most god awful position in the military. At least it used to be, can't say how it is now. When you finally get to, and pass, Ranger School it becomes easier, but not easy. You've graduated to adulthood and will soon be put in a leadership position. Untabbed Rangers have always been used in direct action during conflicts where the Regiment has deployed. Most teams consist of a Team Leader (tabbed E-5), SAW gunner (Usually tabbed Spec4), grenadier (untabbed private, and 1 or 2 riflemen (untabbed private). It's not uncommon to have a team with only 1 tabbed Ranger.
