re: Three ’80s movies that capture the decade’s feel that aren't obvious to those too young

These are for subsections based on youth, geography, socioeconomic class, etc but I would think that the following are up there:

Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Wall Street
The Breakfast Club
St. Elmo’s Fire (not a particularly good movie imo but captures the mid 20s Yuppie crowd well)
Th Big Chill
Urban Cowboy

Well played.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High - high schoolers, California version.
Wall Street - mid 20s yuppies, and boomers in control
The Breakfast Club - high schoolers, Chicago/midwest version
St. Elmo’s Fire (not a particularly good movie imo but captures the mid 20s Yuppie crowd well)
Urban Cowboy - working class Texans
The Big Chill - Boomers in their prime.

re: The Big Chill, think of it-- all those boomers in that movie (the characters AND the actors) are now retired and/or dying (William Hurt, literally)... no one else but Jeff Goldblum is really working much anymore.

Costner seems to be doing okay.

License to Drive… it has it all and predicted commie future culture. I met Heather Graham in Nola one time and made sure to tell her it was my favorite 80s film. She was SMOKINNNNN HOT.

Ernest movies. Know what I mean?

Lost Boys. As others have said… perfect.

Honorable mention: Bloodsport. Ok, USA.

Yeah I was aware of that, and thought about making a joke about the guy who was the focus of the gathering, but whose scenes were cut and had no speaking roles, was doing the most out of the ensemble, but passed because a lot of the younger crowd would not be aware.

80s have two distinct realities...before 1987 and after.

Well you have the Yuppies and the losers as already mentioned in St. Elmo"s Fire.

For after 1987, I'd go for this movie that maybe most haven't seen...for the feeling of being in that time and place and music.

Caveat: Stranger Things does a really good job of encapsulating the 80s even though it's been made recently (except for the walkie-talkies that reach for miles).
