I knew a lawyer who would take down a handle a day. She was brilliant even when drinking but it caught up with her as it always does and one night after hitting about half a handle passed out and never woke up. She was not even 50. Died alone.

Our former federal district court judge died from complications of hardcore alcoholism. She had the syndrome where your brain effectively dies because you've relied on alcohol for your calories for so long, important nutrients weren't provided to keep the brain alive.

Had a buddy drink himself to death in his 40s. We all saw it coming but nobody could tell him anything. In his mind, he was living his best life.
Got divorced, was the fun party guy for a while, but when friends got married, had kids, or settled down he’d just sit in his house and drink every night alone. Became frail looking, got fired from his job, and just drank alone watching movies or listening to music.
We’d try to go over and spend time but that wasn’t our lifestyle and he wasn’t going to change. Ended up dying alone on his couch with a bottle of rum next to him. Pretty sad and pathetic. He was a good hearted guy that let life get the best of him.

My mother became an alcoholic and drank herself to death in her early 50s. Before she died, she was drinking at least a liter of gin a day and went through all four of the alcohol-related events:
Four stages of chronic alcoholism:
1) Shakes
2) Seizures
3) Hallucinations
4) Delirium Tremens
