Cabin air filters? Necessity or a rip off

Genuine question to the OT gear heads. What exactly do these things do and how much of a priority are they in a vehicle? My suv kept throwing up maintenance code after code till I finally replace the thing for damn near $50. Are cabin air filters a ripoff or are they essential to a car?

Mine is 7 years old and if it's causing problems I'm not aware of it

They actually do play a role. I think the standard cheap ones are just about as effective as the more expensive ones.

If you want to be cheap, just clean out the old air filter and put it back.

Yep, I tried vacuuming the thing and that lasted for maybe 6 weeks then my car's dash got the aids. Maintenance codes all over the place. Couldn't clear it with an OBDII so finally looked the code number up, sure enough it was the stupid cabin air filter. My vehicle can actually detect a brand new one vs me cleaning one off lol.

Go to AutoZone and buy a Wix for $8 and do it yourself, woman.

Our posts crossed...that's what I attempted to do but couldn't clear the damn code through my radio/settings till I literally put a new one in.

Do you have a filter on the a/c at your house….
Cabin filter is the air filter for you car A/C
Just like in you house, if clogged if will cut down on cooling capacity

I recommend following the maintenance guidance in the owner's manual.

Yes, media filters.

Somehow I don't believe this. We had vehicles for decades with A/C but no cabin air filter.

I guess.

Finally replaced the one in my 2017 Malibu and I can certainly tell a difference in the airflow of the AC. Blows harder/colder on a lower fan setting than before replacement.

I worked out in California for around a year and while there a family of baby mice died in my cars cabin filter.

I think it’s good to change the cabin air filter every few years. I changed mine last year and it had leaves, pine straw and other crap in it. The cabin air filter can sometimes be the culprit if your A/C isn’t blowing air hard enough.

Yes you should change it out every so often but you should do it yourself.
The cabin air filter is probably the easiest thing you can change out on a car and it's a hell of a lot cheaper to do than what a Quick Lube will charge.

I bought some reusable ones for my Gladiator. I pulled them out about a week ago and was amazed how dirty they were. Washed them off, let dry and good to go.
