Big 12, ACC coaches not keen on proposed CFP byes for SEC, Big Ten

The College Football Playoff hasn't unveiled its first 12-team field yet, but discussions on a 14-team competition beginning in 2026 are already raising eyebrows among Big 12 and ACC coaches.
In the 12-team playoff structure, the five highest-ranked conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the bracket and the four highest-ranked conference winners will earn a first-round bye. But multiple sources told ESPN that one 14-team model that's currently being considered includes provisions for the SEC and Big Ten to get three automatic qualifiers each -- and the only two byes for their conference champions.
"Automatic first-round byes for the Big Ten and SEC is like the NFL saying the Cowboys get a first-round bye since they have more fans than the Bengals," TCU coach Sonny Dykes told ESPN. "How preposterous is that?"

"A playoff format that guarantees a first-round bye to any team, division or conference before the season starts is unheard of in any sport as far as I'm aware," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said Friday. "Based on the premise proposed, a team could be undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country and still not receive a first-round bye because teams were awarded one before the season even began."
A source told ESPN this week that balancing the desires of the power wielded by the SEC and Big Ten with their combined 34 teams is a delicate juggling act.
"The balance in the room is how to recognize contributions of the Big Ten and SEC while also being fair and collaborative to the collective room," the source said.

An automatic bye for a conference is ridiculous. The Big Ten and the SEC will have that most seasons regardless.

Teams outside of the BIG/SEC barely deserve to be in the discussion at this point.

How is this latest information on conference byes, not a tool used by the SEC and B1G to distance themselves from these non-superconferences? It seems silly to react like this is the future of college football when SEC and B1G Presidents and Chancellors are in talks with each other to leave the NCAA and all it represents.
The ACC as we know it will soon not exist in its present format. And when I say soon, like this season. The Big 12 and the ACC are both in full survivor mode and you can't blame them.

Why would the Big Ten have as many automatic qualifies as the SEC???
Should be 4 and 2
Should be 4 and 2

Who cares what the soon to be dead/irrelevant ACC thinks? They’re about to be carved up like a Christmas Turkey and have at best four or five of their original teams left (the dregs like Wake and GT).
The Big Twelve is setting itself up nicely to be a basketball conference for if/when the SEC and Big Ten break away. The absolute best case scenario for them and the rest of the have not’s would be to allow their conference champ and the best champ of the rest to have a non-bye spot and much smaller slice of the pie, but we’re much more likely to see them excluded entirely and the lesser college football/sports ecosystem collapse as tv dollars dry up and schools refuse to supplement the sports out of their endowments.
Long story short: enjoy it while you can, folks. Large swaths of college sports are very likely to go the way of the dodo bird.

The 14 team proposal is Notre Dame being a bunch of crybabies. The committee should tell them to either join a conference or stop being babies.

SEC - NFC
Big10 - AFC
Everyone gets paid, nobody goes to class. (Most shouldn't even be there, if its about aptitude like the rest of the, student body has to be scrutinized).
Why are we going to do this BCS thing and painfully slowly take 5-10 years to get to where WE ALL KNOW where it's going.

This is absolutely 100% the dumbest thing that any sport or league has ever thought of.

This cracks me up. ESPN is the source of all of this.

The SEC and Big 10 should split from the rest of the conferences and have their own championship. Make it an invitational where they invite only the best teams to play. There is no place for a group of 5 team in a real playoff system. They will never make a run and win it all. This isn't basketball with Cinderella stories.

Really bummed what’s becoming of college football.
I’m sure the ratings will be ginormous and the product will be top shelf talent wise but ultimately when fans of the top two dogs (SEC and B1G) are largely “rooting for the laundry” as players come and go and teams are just a lower level of professional ball clubs affiliated with universities, it’s probably just not going to feel quite the same.
Younger generations really won’t know any different in the future so no big deal ….but I’m at least glad I had a chance to enjoy the sport for a lot of years when it was still regionally based “college football” in a truer sense.
