On Tuesday, Mulkey said she read The Advocate's Monday report on plans for the new arena twice.

"It sounds like the new way to go is it's not just going to be a basketball arena. It's going to be an entertainment type of arena," Mulkey said. "Selfishly, I just want it to be a basketball arena. But I would imagine financial decisions go into that – funds and how you pay for it.

"I don't know details. I know what I read in that article, and that's a positive that it's being discussed. I love that, but I'm also a realist. I may be on the beach retired or dead before they put a shovel in the ground. So until I see a shovel in the ground and I see how far down the road it is, I don't know that I'll get to coach in it, but I do know that it's a good thing."

Mulkey, who has been vocal about her desire to to replace the aging PMAC, said her main concern is how much access her team would have to the new arena.

quote:

"I want to practice in the facility every day," she said. "I want to be in there every day, and if you make it an entertainment deal, I think it's pretty obvious you're not going to be in there every day. But I guess the new wave of arenas are being built like this."

Mulkey hopes that she and other LSU coaches will have input on the direction of the new arena.

"I have my ideas and would love to have input, but I don't know that I will," she said. "But I'm not an administrator. I'm not a fundraiser. I'm just a coach. Yeah, I would love to have an opinion, and I would imagine we will be asked for our opinions. But I don't know that our opinions will override money, or exactly what they're going to do with dressing rooms or availability."

quote:

While Mulkey wants to see some of her concerns addressed, she reiterated her support for a new arena.

"It's time. Just walk around here, it's time," Mulkey said. "I don't know that we have that much power or pull. It's attention grabbing, but whatever it is, it's needed."

She does not need to practice daily at the new arena. Just like she does not practice daily in the main part of the PMAC now. Just like football doesn’t practice inside Tiger Stadium daily.

Once the new arena is built and the pmac torn down they’ll actually be able to easily add on to the back of the current practice facility and give the coaches whatever they want at relatively low cost and really not take up much space. (Training rooms, new offices, basketball only weight room, etc)

An entertainment type arena vs a true basketball arena? That’s what Vanderbilt has and it’s the absolute worst basketball arena in SEC.

But basketball and sports alone a not pay for the new arena. To work financially, tge multi purpose idea is best.

Now if donors want to put up everything then that’s a different story. Tell Kim to raise the money.

Pretty much a certainty that she won’t be coaching when whatever is decided on is finished being built. It will take years just to figure out plans let alone start construction. It took them two years just to figure out the bullpens

I find it very hard to believe that she was out of the loop until that article was released.

I’m confused as why it being basketball only is a big deal. Aren’t the vast majority of basketball arenas around the country multi purpose venues?

What is an entertainment area? What do the Pelicans play in? Smoothie King is clearly a basketball arena but it hosts concerts. Is that an entertainment arena?

Not saying this new arena will be that big. Just using it as an example.

IF WE WERE SMART:

Of course getting input from all of the coaches using the facility.

But, heavily involve Mulkey throughout the entire process - from the site selection, design...This will keep her invested in the new facility, wanting to see it through, play a few seasons in the new facility...
it could extend her coaching career if we involve her.

Yes. And in the end, I don’t really care much about WB coach thinks.

Once she’s gone we will all go back to not caring about WBB.

I don’t even care now.

If there’s a new arena built it won’t be because of WBB.
