Letters from Iwo Jima is fantastic and the closest you’ll get.
I’ve watched that already and it’s gangster as hell. One of the most underrated movies in the modern era

Serious question: Does it check off all of the DEI requirements?

How is that a serious question?

By my count, everybody except one person is a minority. I'm pretty sure they hit their numbers.

Sadly Asians don’t count.
Since a vast majority of them are successful, they don’t fit the narrative.
Only blacks and gays/alphabet people count toward diversity.
There were already liberal articles about “where are the black samurai?”. They don’t care for this show, although I don’t know that FX is beholden to any quotas like Amazon etc.

I suppose you are talking about Blackthorne but what about the Dutch sailors and the Portugese? Are they minorities now? Also, it takes place in Japan so the English, Dutch and Portugese are the minorities as depicted. You are going by snowflake American standards so they needed some black folks and lgbtq.

It’s amazing how often the ones triggered by the DEI requirements have no idea how the requirements actually work.

As I recall, I believe that period pieces are subject to more relaxed rules relative to "on screen" talent.
I do recall a number of episodes were directed by women.

I picked up the book after watching the series. Only about a third of the way through as it's a massive book. The book is, uh, explicit in some areas I think I like Book Blackthorne more than Show Blackthorne. He's much smarter in the book. Maybe that's just because we get internal monologue in the book.

Show Blackthorne is an idiot. Toranaga himself says he only keeps him around because he amuses him.
Book Blackthorne was a worthy foil for Toranaga. Book Toranaga keeps him around because Blackthorne was a leverage point against the western powers and could help him in the future build a navy.

I picked up part 1 and 2 and read them over a 3 week period. I finished part 2 right before the finale.
Enjoyed both, but the book was definitely better.

Started this last night and finished the first 2 episodes. I'm loving it like everyone else, but I don't understand Ishido's plan with letting Yabushige rescue Blackthorn from his execution.
He wants to kill Toranaga so badly he caved to the Christian Regents and agreed to Blackthorn's death, but then he allows him to be rescued and returned to Toranaga?
What?
