Those visions were not real. Case in point he return the rosary to the sea. In his dream, he was an old man with the rosary still with him. As he released the rosary he also released his dream of returning home.
Humm, ok, that makes sense. I know in the book and real life he never makes it back to England.

We know that ultimately Blackthorn beats Toranaga and gets home.
Not in the book he didn’t.

I don't care about the book at all. That finale was hot garbage. What a waste of time.

The book ending is pretty abrupt as well just FYI.
It’s basically “And then Toranaga checkmated the entire nation, destroyed his enemies and Blackthorne was his trusted advisor who was never allowed to leave Japan.”
Might as well have played the Justified theme song about never leaving Harlan alive because Blackthorne never stepped foot on a ship again.

Loved it. Everything wrapped up in a satisfying fashion.
Was actually a little confused by the "flashbacks" because I remembered that Blackthorn was never allowed to leave Japan.
A great miniseries. If it does not pile up the hardware, just frick everything.

Shogun was one of the most enjoyable and edge of my seat shows I’ve watched. Fuji-sama was a bawette that would make one adorable wife.
Am I the only one that thought John Blackstone looked a lot like Rick from TWD?

They weren’t flashbacks. He was suffering from a near death experience and was having dreams of what might be. In the dreams he had the rosary with him but actually released it to sea.

I thought he reminded me of a poor man’s Tom Hardy.

I know. That's why I put the word in quotes.

Disagree. It's just that the finale was last week. For better or worse, this was Mariko's story. The last episode was an epilogue to give some closure for the other characters.

really thought he was going to be this absolute psychopath super dark character. He booked a guy alive episode 1.
He’s definitely a psychopath in his own way in the way that he seems to have an obsession with death or ways to die. The whole Japanese culture at the time was that death by sword or earthquake were really the only two ways to go.
Between boiling the guy alive, risking his life to get the Portuguese sailor on the side of the cliff, apparently having his retainer have some kind of list of rankings of ways to die, to begging commit suicide in unconventional or spectacular ways such as shot by a cannon, and even his death poem - he seemed extremely concerned by the method of death.
Which of course is interesting for a guy that betrays people left and right to keep his own head on his shoulders.

Great finale and series start to finish

Yes. In the book he admits his inner thoughts to himself. He explains it all. Even eliminating the heir and his mother.
It also goes on to let you know he wins and how Ishido dies.

I was not expecting a finale like that, but I like it.
The past three shows I've watched have been this, Tokyo Vice, and The Gentlemen. All have been fantastic the whole way through.

see my golden age of TV thread. People dismiss how much good stuff is on because of the overabundance of garbage, but quality right now is through the roof.
going to to try and knock this out tonight. i expect a lot of people will be disappointed, but not know that it's how the book ended TBH.

I thought it was a beautiful ending to a fantastic series. I thought the quietness of the finale matched the tone of the series. Yabushige went out like a champ. That scene was so well done.
