FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's controversial surgeon general is drawing criticism for his handling of an elementary school's measles outbreak, telling parents of unvaccinated children it is their choice whether their students attend class — a contravention of federal guidelines calling for their mandatory exclusion.
Dr. Joseph Ladapo, nationally known for his outspoken skepticism toward the COVID-19 vaccine, sent a letter this week to parents at Manatee Bay Elementary School near Fort Lauderdale after six students contracted the highly contagious and potentially deadly virus. Such outbreaks are rare in the United States, though reported cases have spiked from 58 for all of 2023 to 35 already this year.
The letter notes that when a school has a measles outbreak, it is “normally recommended” that unvaccinated students who haven't previously had the disease be kept home for three weeks “because of the high likelihood” they will be infected.

Not every state requires every student to get vaccinated.

If your kids are vaxxed against measles, then why would you care if someone else has it?
Remember, comrade. Vaccines prevent infection!

Since when?
With a wide open border no one talks about the spreading of communicable diseases much, why?

Authoritarians lack common sense.

That’s not the issue. It’s the fact that to reduce the spread, those without vaccination should avoid contact in the short term for their own safety and to help reduce the spread.
Unlike with COVID, these vaccines actually work and an outbreak could be quickly controlled if the unvaccinated members stay out of exposure.
Instead, idiots like this guy are trying to play politics and putting everyone at risk. There are kids that could not get the vaccine for legitimate health reasons, unlike the parents using religious exemptions for their kids (which is their right).
Sometimes it is okay to sit home to help protect others and I am not talking about the extreme covid shutdowns.

The media is desperate that people not know that this is being driven by mass third world migration.

Some of you are just ridiculous. First off, vaccines don’t prevent infection. They never have. They help prevent the target antigen from incubating and growing to a point of either harming the host or making the host infectious to others.
They are effective when low exposure levels exist. Once exposure levels are high, you can still get sick even if vaccinated because the immune system can only work so fast.
This is why people saying vaccines are either perfect or not is ridiculous.

Why don't the "others" stay home?

Measles vaccine has a long record of being safe and effective,?regardless of the nut cases and fruitcakes who believe the nonsense to the contrary.

Hard no. I’m not sitting home, nor will my kids.

The ones with health risks are. That doesn’t mean the outbreak will be controlled, but suit yourself. It’s not about our society anymore but in most of yalls cases, everything is about you. Most of you sound like Millennials and the new generations, which is hilarious given how much you bitch about them.

Because not everyone is immunized or can be immunized. There are lots of people (kids and adults with immune conditions) whose bodies don't respond normally to develop adaptive immunity to vaccination or for whom vaccination risks outweigh their potential benefits. They rely on herd immunity to limit their exposure to avoid potentially very harmful, even lethal diseases.

Because talking about illegals bringing in illnesses because their healthcare system is shite while ours has largely defeated those illnesses was considered racist. It's only now that this issue is starting to impact the coastal elites in the Northeast that it's no longer considered "racist" to acknowledge this fact.

Some vaccinations have been around long enough to be considered safe and a greater good to society. Hope no pregnant school staff or parents wind up coming down with measles.
Posted on 2/24/24 at 10:49 am to cajunangelle
Given the high prevalence of that vaccine uptake, where are the measles coming from?

That's because society = socialism, and community = communism.

They're completely ignoring Third World diseases that are running rampant in places like LA.
