The New Orleans Pelicans have added Karlo Matkovic to their G League team, the Birmingham Squadron, league sources told @hoopshype. Matkovic was the 52nd overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft by the Pelicans.

Guess that answers that

Well at least he can be evaluated against better talent.

Yeah, Squadron only has 3 games left in the season though, so kind of weird to happen this late.

Could just be to buy time until they can convert Matt and then sign Karlo to that 2 way deal

There's a lot more than 3 games?

Has to be. There's no way he'd come over from Europe just for 3 games. We're obviously waiting to convert Matt Ryan until we can comfortably stay under the tax.

The schedule on the Squadron website defaults to a month view and doesn't make it easy to see how to move to the next month. He probably missed March. There are 11 games in March, so 14 left.

He did not impress at Summer League, so getting him some time in a closer to NBA setting with NBAish level athletes to see if what he's been doing in Europe will translate makes sense. He either translates and you know what you have heading into next year, or he doesn't translate and you cut your losses and move on. Knowing that now is way more valuable than finding out this summer after the draft.

It would be weird for him to leave a nice situation in Euro for just GLeague.

Its clear they want to get him GL experience against the competition and have "promised" him something for either late season or next year

He could play in the GLeague team with a 2 way or 2nd round exception contract. If it is as it sounds, and this is a Squadron contract, I can think of only 2 reasons for that.

1) They want to sign Karlo but want to wait for some reason and this gets him both experience and a little money in the interim.

2) They want to evaluate before committing. Why would Karlo do that? Playing in the NBA is a dream for a lot of Euro players. Guys that literally could be a Euro MVP take bench roles regularly hoping to break through. If Karlo fails with the Squadron, he'll have a new Euro contract for next season with no problem, so he's not really giving up much.

So four 2-ways? Hill, Karlo, Seabron, and Ryan

Why wouldn’t we just cut Seabron?

Probably because he's a valuable player for the Squadrons and it protects him from being poached.

I mean, we have Karlo's rights until the draft, right? We don't need to sign him to anything more than a G-League contract until the off-season, when we can make a decision.

Right. I think most assumed him leaving Europe mid season was because he was promised a contract. So far it looks like all he was promised was an audition.

But is the focus of a G League team to keep players valuable to them or to use it as a farm team for the NBA team?

We used these contracts on JRE who was coverted and Matt Ryan who may still be converted didn't we?

That's the rub, why try to protect promising players that never contribute to the big league club. Pels can't find Hawk minutes let alone Seabron and Ryan.

I'm talking about being poached from the squadrons. They still need to field a competitive team. And Both Seabron and Hill are their leading scorers.
