The sheriff level is a good place to start this, as they work independently of the terribly corrupt big cities etc. if they produce results and don't piss people off, they'll stay in office.
A sheriff can tell pretty much anyone to get themselves good and fricked.
Empowering them is a solid step, but there needs to be others, like making sure the right sheriff is in place.
It was always true, but covid really showed us nationally how important these positions can be.
Local elections matter, especially sheriff, mayor, School board and the gatekeeping positions those positions allow them to fill with their people.

Nothing will change drastically in NOLA until the consent decree dies.

Nobody cares about places where the only crime is a speeder who didn't see the 5 MPH drop in speed limit sign hidden behind a tree and got pulled over by a "cop" who was sitting in a place where his tires have worn grooves in the dirt.

No but let's say you're the most powerful governor in the country.
You empower those outskirts, surround the (blue)cities with law and order, then starve them of funding through as many other means as you can.
If they don't play ball, you just take the game elsewhere.
Maybe literally. Corps wanna play in Louisiana?
Saints want a new stadium?
Cool. It's gonna be outside the city, and sentencing for property violations and violent crime is going through the roof, and those SD's are gonna be empowered to enforce it.
The "right" needs to take the initiative and use power when they have it.

Speeding is a crime, regardless of what I or you might think. If reducing speeders leads to more money, used to hire more cops, so be it. I would rather pay a hundred dollar speeding ticket than spend a week on the county farm as punishment for my speeding crime.
In Jackson (my favorite example of a crime plagued rat hole) many criminals are caught when they are pulled over for speeding, weaving through traffic, or some other violation of traffic laws.
I speed, just like everyone else. I do it, knowing that excessive speed often leads to traffic accidents that injure or kill others. So does weaving through traffic, cutting folks off. running stop lights, turning without using a turn signal, texting while driving, drinking a cold one while or before driving, bla, bla bla.

It's vehicular jaywalking and functionaly just a tax.
This isn't the point here, so whatever. Id like to see "us" write off cops as a COST, not something to self-fund, because that effectively becomes their mission instead of actually stopping the shitbirds

Good people are targeted and ostracized from industries and institutions with deep systemic corruption such as law enforcement, eventually causing them to seek other employment. What you're left with is a bunch of corrupt good ole baw thug pigs who all have each others backs. That's what law enforcement is today. That's why they can't hire and keep people.

For some retarded reason people want every function of government to turn a profit or at least be completely self sustaining without the need for tax dollars.
Creates extremely perverse incentives but who cares about that I guess.

I've been where you are and I completely understand those arguments. CAF, QI, all of it.
I think the difference now is I've lost patience with the coddling of the violent criminal element, and grown tired of LE pushing out to the burbs to give stopsign, hands free and seatbelt tickets to soccer moms.
They won't get shot, they get their money, and the criminals keep going.
These reforms have to come with strings that require "scalps" so to speak, and not just presence and budget boosting.
The fix isn't leaving the criminals to their own devices. Weve done it. It doesn't work.

While I agree that crime is a major issue facing this state, what is the governor supposed to do about it? I find that to be more of a localized problem to solve no matter who is in office

Focusing on revenue collection first public safety second is perverse.
Every penny you’re spending on having some yokel shoot radar is a penny you’re not spending on solving felonies.

Once they ditch their public sector unions.
Cop unions are the reason for the bad, corrupt cops that get a DUI and then a slap on the wrist because of police unions are a fricking joke.
They need to be held to a higher, more professional standard. But that will never happen with police unions. Police unions exist for "CYA" and to negotiate against taxpayers.

The consent decree needs to die. All it’s done is give thugs free rein. A NOLA cop told me that. Their hands are tied.

I believe if Louisiana were its own country, it'd have the highest incarceration rates of any country, like 300+.
Posted on 2/18/24 at 9:26 am to fallguy_1978
There isn't a single thing you can do about crime besides what that El Salvador pres did, by locking them up and having an even already extremely, exteremely high incarceration rate in Louisiana.
Any move where the thugs in Louisiana are left in the street will always result in crime continuing. There's no program, or extra officers, or anything that'll make it go down. The absolute only way possible is for them to be removed from society and put in a prison.
If they are left for their own free will, it will 100% continue to happen.

Mass incarceration for violent crime works

Obviously for good reason
How many wrongful convictions?

Incarceration is one step. Old school sanitariums and asylums need to be built and housed as well.

$3200 bail is bad for kilos of heroine like that. I've seen other states give $50,000 bail for something wayyyyy less than that much heroine. It was like a some drunk guy slapped a girls arse in public and got $50k bail for that.
