I dunno, but I’ve (embarrassing to admit) become an alcoholic the last 2 years and I need to change. But everyday I start the cycle over again. I go to bed just about every night with great intentions for the next day.
You’re not alone.
I haven’t asked for help yet, but I’m getting to that point because I seemingly can’t do it on my own, even though I’ve definitely tried multiple times. Hell I’m gonna try again tomorrow… I’ve got a sticky note on my kitchen counter “DO NOT DRINK TODAY!”
Fortunately it hasn’t wrecked my life yet… work, finances, etc still fine… but this is not who I want to be yet I keep doing it. I’m sorry I don’t have the answer for you.

You need to have an epic bender and get so sick you don’t have an urge to drink.

Try AA. You don’t have to go it alone.

One of the best things to do is get rid of any alcohol in your house. It's so very easy to just crack a beer if there's one in the fridge.
I was having health issues and had bloodwork done and it was absolutely horrible. I gave up drinking cold and all of the problems I was having reverted back to normal.
You'll be happy once you stop.

I hear that.
Your sense of normal has gotten skewed. I was Fri-Sat for a long time but then gradually some Tues and/or Wed, and/or Thurs. Just having 2-4 drinks while surfing or watching TV. Yeah it creeps up on you. Working to cut back to just occasional wine after meal, occasional beer, but not the damn 5-6/7 nights a week shite.

You recognize that alcohol is a problem and are trying to remedy it. That’s not embarrassing at all. Keep an open mind and give AA a shot. It’s full of guys that tried to quit a million times but weren’t able to until they went to their first meeting.

Walk into a local AA meeting. It will change your life. It changed mine.

I’m not sure if you are religious, but for me doing it during lent makes it pretty easy to be disciplined. It makes me think about Jesus, his suffering and sacrifice, which makes my “sacrifice” seem very trivial.
As I’ve become an adult I’ve realized how stupid we have let lent become. Even the church basically endorses “no meat on fridays” but a fried shrimp poboy that you normally wouldn’t even go out of your way for is acceptable. So I started fasting on Fridays until dark and eating whatever for dinner, then extended that to their days of fasting. Not drinking is all part of that.
Not too late to try for this lent, if you are looking for motivation. I’ve found that it’s helped me spiritually more than anything, and to grow as a person to make my own decisions and to not do things blindly just because that’s what we are told was acceptable. It’s a chance to learn rather than an obligation
Good luck to anyone that wants to stop. We are all wired differently and all have different experiences. For some it’s much easier than for others, but it all comes down to discipline, maybe this is thing that you let yourself off the hook from. Having a bigger reason than “I need to cut back” is helpful in not giving yourself any excuses. For me, doing it cold turkey during lent gives me an immediate place to shift urges

Jesus have you been reading my post in the Lunch Threads?
Sounds like me before I quit drinking 5 1/2 months ago
The biggest factor for me was being there for my son, I was drinking after work and would find reasons to go to the bar before coming home and drinking more. My days were turning into blurs and it just hit me that I wanted to be in my sons life as a positive influence. For me, it was about loving someone else more than I loved myself, which as an only child, has always been difficult for me.

I don’t know if you’re a spiritual person, but I turned to God and just give it to him and it’s amazing how he can move in your life.
Join a good church and join some fellowship groups like Bible studies and surround yourself with positive influence etc…. And it gets easier
