Niners players didn’t know the new OT rules.

Ouch.
And to make it sting even worse:
This was no conspiracy. Reid and Co. simply coached circles around Shanahan and Co.
quote:
"I didn't even know about the new playoff overtime rule, so it was a surprise to me," Niners defensive lineman Arik Armstead said. "I didn't even really know what was going on in terms of that."
quote:
Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said he and his analytics staff discussed overtime possibilities before the game, but Armstead and fullback Kyle Juszczyk both said that overtime strategy was not discussed with 49ers players leading up to the Super Bowl. "You know what? I didn't even realize the playoff rules were different in overtime," Juszczyk said. "I assume you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win. I guess that's not the case. I don't totally know the strategy there. We hadn't talked about it, no.”
Ouch.
And to make it sting even worse:
quote:
The Chiefs, conversely, said they were well prepared for an overtime contingency in the postseason. Defensive lineman Chris Jones told reporters that Kansas City "talked for two weeks about new overtime rules," while safety Justin Reid said their preparation began in training camp.
"We've talked about it all year," Reid said. "We talked about it in training camp about how the rules were different in regular season versus the playoffs. Every week of the playoffs we talked about the overtime rule."
This was no conspiracy. Reid and Co. simply coached circles around Shanahan and Co.

This is being a bit dramatic.
Shanahan's analytics team and his staff discussed the gameplan. Is the argument the 49ers players played too hard when they had the ball first? Certainly they weren't loafing if they thought it was the old rules.

Yet another example of why Kyle Shanahan is a perennial choke artist. LOLOL
What a joke this supposed "genius" is.

I don't know if I agree with it, but he said they wanted to be in position to have the ball third.

I have to imagine math says that receiving is the correct call with the new rules.

IMO, it does make sense, but I can see arguments either way. If you believe in your offense, you want the ball first because you believe you'll score a TD and worst case scenario in that event you get the ball third in a sudden death situation.
I don't see what the big deal is with the players not knowing the rule differences, it didn't affect anything in the game.

If he kicked, the Chiefs scored a TD, then the 49ers scored a TD to tie, and the Chiefs kicked a FG that next possession to win the game, he’d also be getting killed.

100%

How did this affect the game?

quote:And then the team that goes second gets the huge advantage of knowing they have 4 downs instead of 3 the entire way down the field. It makes no sense to take the ball and play for a hypothetical third possession that may never happen, when jt js GURANTEED the 2nd possession happens where the kicking team has a big advantage

Most of San Fran’s team looks like they cannot read.

So dumb that you guys are continuing to throw this hypothetical out there. He elected to receive and ended up having to kick on FG near the goal line because of it.

I was going on and on about how retarded taking the ball first was last night until I realized this. It’s definitely the right decision if you set yourself up to get 1 more possession than the other team

The chief's D was gassed so i'm not surprised they took the ball.

Exactly. Much ado about nothing.

The chiefs D had been off the field for 22 minutes. How were they gassed? They may have been worn out, but if you can’t recover after 20 minutes then you aren’t recovering period. It isn’t like they just came off the field right before OT started

Before OT, everything is a hypothetical. You choose to kick or receive based on hypotheticals.
I’m just saying that it’s easy to say what he should have done now because of how it turned out.
