Considering how many characters either got adapted out or ended up substantially different from the books, I’m not going to dismiss GRRM’s claims out of hand.


Simplest things to illustrate this-

1. Barristan is still alive in Winds Of Winter and is a POV character but got killed off well before that point on the show

2. Aegon VI never appeared on the show but is a major focus of the build to Winds Of Winter.

That’s an entire major plot line which couldn’t be done because they either couldn’t fit it in or just didn’t give a frick. Given how they treated Barristan’s actor when he pointed out his character was still alive in the books, I would lean toward the latter.

As with any character dense book adaptation, characters are going to get left out. That’s just part of the adaptation to screen. And not something exclusive to D&D.
