Yeah, for about a year when I was 9 or 10. Yoshi-something-or-other. The only thing I really learned was how to count to ten in Japanese.

As a kid I can state this is absolutely true. I was taking taekwondo and boxing golden gloves at the same time between 10 and 14 and also getting in a fight or two most days of the week and I do not remember a single time using anything in any of those kid fights that I learned in either . Like most kid fights these fights consisted of a couple of punches at best, grabbing one another and going to the ground and wrestling until one of us got tired. I don't know about it as an adult but it didn't help a bit as a kid...and most of us were taking some sort of martial art classes in the late 1970s. We fought constantly but it was always a couple of punches at best and a wrestling match that would last about 2 minutes.

Muay Thai for 19 years. A little bit of ground work and MMA mixed in. Love it. Releases some pent up violence. It is a great way to stay in shape and have confidence to handle yourself if needed, especially with the average person on the street. It is not, however, low impact on my aging body.

it's stupid to just say across the board that taking martial arts is useless in actual fighting. do you think that UFC fighters are equal in "actual" fighting ability to some jerkoff on the street with no training?

Shotokan Karate when I was a teenager. Couldn’t make it to green belt. Got 4th place in Kata at a tournament once.

If you remember back to the original UFC's there were a few guys who had a 'karate' or 'kung fu' or whatever background. They all got destroyed because it doesn't work. Martial Arts for kids its great anything that gets them away from a computer or tablet and being active is fine not knocking that aspect of it. Fighting is trashy anyway don't do it.

Um no. This was in like UFC 1,2,3,4 etc the early days. They were destroyed by guys who knew how to actually fight. It was very crude almost like barroom brawling. They are on youtube go watch them.

Of course not...but 99.9% of the people who have taken some martial arts classes over the years and earned belt after belt would get their arse whipped by the professional fighter who trains to earn a living. I would bet that most martial artists who do not also train for UFC fights would not fare well in an UFC ring with a professional.

They did. They did some tests and observations and determined that I suffered from being a perfectly normal 12 year old boy in 1977. We got in fights all the time. We also had bb wars, had horrendous bicycle crashes, hunted shite out of season with .22 rifles and airguns...all manner of shite that seems strange today. We would play king of the mountain and tackle the man with the ball and someone would be fighting every 15 minutes or so...and we would do it hours everyday.

About half the time older kids and adults would ag us on. We had a service station where the owner had gloves and we would fight one another and the winner would win a coke. It was perfectly normal at the time...boys fought all the time. Most of the time we had no reason other than we liked to hit one another and wrestle.

You are an idiot, I would say 95%+ of the guys who actually won had real martial arts training. What does “knew how to fight” even mean
