No, but the older I get the less of a deterrence it is.

He could have taken a plea deal and done 3 years but turned it down. Ended up doing seven. He went in at 19, got out at 26, started to get his life together and died 3 months later due to cardiac arrest.
jeez man, this story is an emotional rollercoaster.

It was in SERE school not a true POW but as close as I ever want to be. I wasn’t an instructor but had former ‘NAM POWs that were in my instructor cadre.
SERE in the late 80/early 90s was a bit different than now. We got the shite knocked out of us, interrogated with several now outlawed methods and were made pretty damn miserable.
My son did SERE a couple years ago and at Christmas he and his buddy where in class together were talking about a part of it and when they got to the past where the instructors would stop and “instruct” I was shocked. They went in and out is POW/capture mode for teachable moments. Our teaching was before we went out and at the end. The time I was a POW I was one 24x7 and the only relief was to quit or escape. I managed to get out twice and ended up in a box for most of three days. That fricking box was just large enough to fit me hunched over, feet down, no sitting, no kneeling, imagine being 6’2” and 225 in a box that was maybe 2 feet deep, 3.5 feet high, and 3’ long. I had to be taken to a medic to get straightened out again.
I would say I spent 18 or so hours in that fricking box, complete misery.

Keep to yourself, be respectful, but stand up tall and keep a stern look on your face. Workout in your free time and get a prison job if you can. If someone comes after you, stand up for yourself as best you can. Those people smell fear.
