re: Are F1 drivers athletes?

I watched the Speed telecast of the race and at one point the announcers mentioned that they spoke to a representative from Brembo who said that the drivers would be applying 350 lbs of force to the brakes for the lead up to turn 12. And they went on to say it is akin to doing a 350 lb leg press with one foot.
Can you push 350 lbs with one leg?

To clarify, G-force is a measure of acceleration and F1 drivers feel up to 6Gs during every race.
How's your neck strength at 6gs and 200 mph?

Those guys have some pretty crazy core, upper body, and neck strength. They sweat about a half gallon or so each race because of the heat coming from the car and track. The training is pretty intense. I'd think they should be categorized as athletes.

I used to be torn on this but then I went to an actual race last year and yea, these baws are def athletes. That takes a toll on your body mentally and physically maybe more than an NBA game.

The same logic makes gamers athletes, which they are not.
Figured someone would say that, but I disagree. I don’t think driving an F1 car makes you an athlete, but I think all F1 drivers are pretty athletic. Not sure if that makes sense though.

Absolutely. They’re as physically fit as most other athletes out there. They aren’t big buff guys, because they have to fit into the car, but their stamina, conditioning, coordination and reflexes are crucial to what they do.

Have you seen the forces that they endure or the cardio that is required to stay sharp during those races
Sure, but rational people aren't comparing it to sitting on the couch or driving to the store on a beer run. They're comparing it to what other famous athletes do - run, jump, lift, throw, swing, etc.
How would these F1 drivers do if you put them on a bicycle and made them race in the Tour de France? Keep in mind that things like vision, reflexes, coordination and focus would presumably transfer over. They would get left in the dust because of the whole muscle and stamina thing.
I think it's fair to say racecar driving is more of a skill than athleticism. It probably requires more athleticism than the average person realizes but it's not comparable to what we see in the olympics or the Super Bowl.

This is a terrible comparison. Of course an athlete specializing in one sport would get smoked in another sport. There are very few Bo Jacksons in the world.
That said, there is one current F1 driver that regularly podiums semi-pro cycling races.

1 lap in an F1 car would result in
80% of the OT would be on the verge of passing out
50% would throw up
10% would shite on themselves

100%.
The mental and physical fortitude to do what they do is off the charts.
Same goes for NASCAR drivers, also. You have to be some kind of strong mentally and physically to be able to withstand 5G's of force pushing down on you on 30 degrees of banking lap after lap for 4-500 miles.

90% couldn't fit in the car to begin with.

Same with Indy car drivers.
And Rally drivers and the guys that do the TT on Isle of Man? They're simply insane.

This is completely asinine. I'd edit this out and maybe we won't judge you.
"Hey guys, Michael Jordan couldn't make it past AA ball, so he really wasn't a very good athlete. Certainly not as good of an athlete as the ones who make it to the show."

I wouldn't know how to start the damn thing and even if I did, I'd run it into the wall on the first turn

They start them externally. But you wouldn't have to worry about hitting the wall because the hand clutch would pretty much ensure you wouldn't move an inch.
There's a good video from Top Gear of Richard Hammond trying to drive one.

How would Charles Barkley do on a golf course?
Your argument is funny and sad

Probably so just because of their elite reaction times but the best race drivers in the world have to be rally drivers. Those dudes are maniacs

I was once obsessed with becoming a racecar driver. Karted as a kid and did well until a I had a serious MVA in my teens. Before the injury, I followed racing religiously. That era of the Rally Championship was amazing. I pretty much stopped following motorsports after the accident.
It's crazy to see how mainstream F1 is now in America. Before, it was only on Speed and Fox Sports with either early morning telecasts. I might start following it again.

Most people couldn't get past anti-stall mode.
