Slammed the door on the seatbelt buckle? Or some hard metallic thing.

This is the answer. The reason the door doesn’t have any damage is because the force of the door was against the fat part of the buckle. The door jamb side was against the metal blade part of the buckle.

Have your son sit in the car with his seatbelt on and buckled. Get him to unbuckle it and prevent it from retracting. Have him get out of the car and see if the buckle hangs down far enough to rest in the door jamb. If it does, mystery solved.

It looks bullet sized, but zero chance a bullet hit at that exact path and didn't do a ton more damage.

Not necessarily, Ever seen a 22 shoot a vase off an old cabinet style tv? One broken vase...no bullet found...no hole in the wall behind it...big, BIG lesson learned by a few of us about the assumption of an "unloaded" gun.

Would he let someone else drive? My guess something like a lanyard with keys and whatnot was put into the door pocket and hung down just low enough to catch. Its too far forward for the seatbelt latch but the door definitely slammed shut on something.

The OP just bought his kid a nice car. He comes home with damage that is pretty obvious he know where the damage came from. He isnt telling his dad anything

And you ask why he should care? jfc

Having just bought our 16 year old a new car, I should say that the chances of this car suffering some damages is pretty high. And it was factored in during the car purchase.

At the end of the day, its just stuff. Kids should learn responsibility, absolutely. But not worth going full metal jacket on your son tho.

sincerly,
Kid who was raised by a very volitile dad.

Is the car meant to be driven or put in a showroom? If he’s worried about it getting dinged up don’t buy a kid a new car? It seems much ado about nothing and having lived with a dad just like the OP I feel sorry for the kid.

Not sure how your son could damage the car that badly and not know how it happened.

Guessing when you take it in they’ll call it a total loss.

I believe it's time for an update on this most serious offense...

Has the kid come clean about what happened?

Has the Father taken any punitive action to encourage cooperation in the investigation?

Has the Father sought any counseling to assist him in gaining some perspective about life and to address some of his other...'issues'?

I noticed a scratch on my truck and it brought to mind this thread. I was wondering what this week's bumper to bumper inspection has revealed? Have you found any additional, mysterious dings? Did you ever get to the bottom of the other crime of the century?

Please fill us in about what happened.

I think the issue is less about the damage and more about the fact the kid is being mum regarding how it happened.

I've taught my kids to respect and take care of the things they have, and even more so for the things they didn't buy. I'm not giving my kids hell for an accident. It happens and it's an object. That doesn't mean we can't instill a little responsibility along the way.

Its way too small to be a bullet. I didn't find out, i didn't fix it…it’s his car, he can fix it he wants when he gets money.

what does the bottom of the door itself look like? Did he slam it on something?

And, of course he knows exactly what happened.
