Carroll's lawyer R Kaplan and the Manhattan Fedral Judge L Kaplan are related.

Trump lawyer Alina Habba said she was unaware Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Kaplan and Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan worked together in the early 1990s at the same powerhouse white-shoe law firm until Saturday, when asked about it by Post columnist Charles Gasparino, who was told by a source that the judge was once Roberta Kaplan’s “mentor.
“It was never disclosed. It’s insane and so incestuous,” Habba said, insisting neither the 79-year-old judge nor Roberta Kaplan, 57, who aren’t related, disclosed the “conflict of interest” and a violation of judicial ethics rules.

This is a serious issue. The judge should have disclosed this personal and professional relationship. Habba is going to have a buffet of issues for appeal.

I’ve called it what it is from the beginning…politically persecution.

So nobody thought to check out Kaplan and Kaplan when the damn trial started?

Is this not an issue?

Personal and undisclosed friendships can be a basis for disqualification. A judge may have to recuse even where there isn’t an immediate family member in the case. I’m not sure if this relationship would have required recusal. But the problem here is that the judge failed to disclose. If the information had been disclosed, Trump could have filed a recusal motion. This is a big deal, in my view.

Title is wrong. They aren't related, they worked together and one was the others mentor.

If it was 30-ish years ago, unlikely.

As a matter of course, the judge should have disclosed that he worked in private practice with plaintiff’s counsel. Any judge worth his salt would do this. I know federal and state judges who routinely recuse sua sponte from cases involving former law partners.

Look at the judge in Georgia having worked in Fani Willis' office.
This stuff is crazy.

Not sure your article matches your title. Enough to hate about the trial without twisting facts. Not related but close ties.

I bet if they do a 23 and me they are related .

Not only worked with her, but was her mentor. That takes on a more personal tone having worked so closely.
It deserved to be known prior to trial. I think this gets overturned by other measures however.

she 1000% knew and wanted the issue for appeal. for a regular joe this likely wouldn't warrant recusal but would warrant disclosure. For a president, it warrants both. Great strategy honestly

exactly -- a quick call up to the bench and then putting it on the record at the very least -- i still think she knew. how you wouldn't is almost malpractice for not doing your research on the opposing counsel and judge
