My question was essentially what’s the reasoning for the 24 hour test? I believe someone answered it. Kind of strange that in 2024 we don’t have some sort of instantaneous results.

Probably best to expectations low. Say 24 hours and get it done sooner then you are a hero.

All of the Restaurants/Bars and Sky Clubs at the airport are closed and the bathrooms are closed as well.

Either way, this is ridiculous. We're one of incredibly few places in the country that accept this.

There's a reason Louisiana is one of the only low cost of living states that people are leaving in mass.

There's a bigger discussion to be had here.

Maintenance of a water system ultimately depends on property taxes and water bills.

Our water bills are low compared to many parts of the country.

Our property taxes are extremely low compared to many parts of the country.

Now people will scream, BS our taxes aren't low, sales tax, state income tax, etc.

So much of our tax money is being sent to Baton Rouge where it is absolutely wasted on pet projects and way too many universities.

So JP can't raise enough revenue to maintain the water system. But Louisiana can suck enough revenue to pay off some podunk redneck legislator by spending $1M on the Museum of BS that will get built in his district.

Nothing will change until we have massive reform of our tax system. Reduce or eliminate income tax. Increase proeprty taxes. Keep property taxes at the local level. Stop sending so much money to BR where they can use it for political patronage.

My friend flew out of MSY yesterday evening and had a few drinks at the bar thinking he could piss when he got on his flight.
Nope. The airplane supposedly had their toilet out of service as well. Luckily only a 2 hour flight, but that seems like a regulation screw up or something with not having a restroom available on a flight.

There were some really pissed off and obnoxiously loud people arriving into the city this morning who went ballistic when they found out there were no bathrooms available.

frick that, they should have brought in those big portable bathroom trailers to the tarmac and let people use the bathroom before entering the gate...or at least outside the checkin area before people went through TSA

There's no FAA regulation on it.

Some airlines will not take off if no lavatories are working though, I think

is pretty disgraceful that JP has this problem fairly often with as much money as this Parish Government has

A few months back I was chatting with a Parish guy and he said that they had some 800 open positions....now obviously not all are with the water department there was a fair amount.

Don't ignore the fact that the entire city of New Orleans sits on top of a swamp with a high water table. The weather (like the recent draught, rain, and freeze) affects the water table and when that happens the ground/soil shifts. Shifting ground/soil + old pipes = break.

Dont ignore facts....when the city was built it was built 10'-15' above sea level

When the city was founded in 1718 it was above sea level - and parts of it are still above sea level (only about 5 to 10 feet though).

But it had a problem - the city was built on a flood plane and surrounded by a swamp.

New Orleans wasn’t built below sea level. The original inhabitants built on high ground. Subsidence has caused the city to be below sea level. That’s a man-made issue, not a natural one.

So they actually have clean potable drinking water passing through this pipe or was this pipe on the other side of the treatment plant?

When man decided to build in those areas, nature takes over.

But we would be a much smaller metro area had we only built on high land.

Pipe was under the highway so it is post-treatment.

Now... is that years of rust on the inside of the pipe, or is that dirt that got in when the pipe broke?

They had a major water main break right outside treatment plant, it affected the entire Eastbank. But yet they had it fixed in less than 24 hours…

Orleans parish would’ve taken a week..

Orleans has more than one major water main....so if one goes down they can revert

Looks like there is a plan to replace pipes like this, but it's going to take a while.

quote:

Heeding Lee Sheng's warnings, the Parish Council in 2021 approved her plan to increase customers' water and sewer bills incrementally over the next two decades to cover the upgrades, including to the water main that broke Tuesday.

"We knew this was going to happen. We were proactive about it. But we couldn't get to it fast enough," Lee Sheng said Wednesday.
