Everyone freaks out over Bern’s Steakhouse. I thought it was ok, but in fairness I’m not a steakhouse person.

If you are into steakhouses that’s probably an option.

Yes because it ranks constantly as a top10 steakhouse in the US so why would you not mention it.

And I am a steakhouse person.

To be fair Bern's is a destination primarily because of their winelist, which is one of the biggest in the world. The food is very good, but it's not something I'd go way out of my way for. Also, it's decorated like a brothel . But it's an experience and if you have opportunities for multiple meals in Tampa you should go there.

I’m not really, but Berns is one of my favorite restaurant experiences.

Rocca - Michelin started Italian. Tremendous. Mozzarella cart seems like a gimmick but is delicious. All the pastas are dynamite.

Oak & Ola - Anne Kearney of Peristyle fame. Cool spot and great food.

Olivia- Also Italian.

On Swann - New American.

Bern's - go to the dessert room after.

Columbia - Ybor city location.

Tampa is a very underrated restaurant city.

Also Ciro’s Cocktail bar.

Really cool in the first level of some condo complex. But fantastic drinks and good food. Have to call for password but highly recommend it

Solid recommendations thus far…

Chinese - Yummy House Michelin Bib Gourmand winner

Deli - Wright’s Gourmet House

Best Cuban Sandwich - La Segunda Ybor

Argentinian - El Puerto Ybor

Cuban - Arco Iris, La Teresita

Italian - Rocca, Donatello or Piccola. Three very different vibes and price points here.

Bern’s gets a lot of hate or high praise depending on who you ask. I like it; it’s old school cool and a level of table service you seldom see in this day and age. Is it the best steak in Tampa? No…. but it’s priced very fairly and the dessert room experience is second to none. The best steak is actually at Charley’s.

I’ll second the nod to Oak & Ola.

Finally; the Columbia in Ybor is solid Cuban/Spanish cuisine. It’s also a bit of a tourist trap. That said; restaurants don’t survive 120+ years unless they are doing something right.

Been here two decades now and I do love this town. For the first time ever we’re considering leaving. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for the middle class to stay here. Beyond the increased home prices and/or rent it’s the huge surges in home/auto insurance and skyrocketing property taxes. The infrastructure wasn’t made for the volume of new residents. My wife’s 20 mile commute to work once took less than 30 minutes. Now it’s an hour plus each way. This sort of traffic is why we left Atlanta. I think the moment interest rates go down or home prices start slipping you are going to see a mass exodus from parts of Florida.

What I really like about Bern’s is a) the pricing isn’t out control and all the food is solid to pretty good b) the wine list is a blast. Want to take a flier on a 40 year old wine that costs $60? Do it.

And that dessert room experience is just cool.
