re: Board Games?

Yup.
I never knew why I hated Catan, but it's because it's very luck driven (obvious now).
Castles of Burgandy has so many directions you can go, and then including mitigating your rolls with workers, it's just way more fun (albeit more dense and harder to keep score).
Played a game of Castles last night and planning another for tonight.

Has this board ever gotten together to play something like Settlers of Catan?
I fear what a TD get together would actually look like.

Fair enough. I looked into the local board game groups and it looked like a kink friendly type of group

Any suggestions for my next foray into the medium weight games?
Thinking about Concordia.

I'm not the one to ask. I'd be happy to play Life at this point

It was more for slough or ziggy stardust

Concordia is a good game. It's a little dry, but no more so than Castles of Burgundy.
If you want something with strategy and also nice art/theme, there's Scythe.
If you've never played a deckbuilder, you might try Dominion. That game has almost limitless variety if you get a couple of the different sets.
If you want to dive a little deeper into complexity, you might like Great Western Trail.

I second both of these games. Scythe is one of my favorites. Also has a steam version so can play with friends online too.

We started with deck building entry level with Quest for El Dorado and liked it a lot.
Scythe was on my list of next steps as well.
Want to steadily build to Terraforming Mars, Ark Nova, Brass: Birmingham, etc.

Brass Birmingham isn't as complicated as it looks. The strategy is deep but the actions you have available are pretty simple. Hard to find a better strategy game.

I really like Castles of Burgandy and thought it was going to be a nightmare keeping track of points, knowing all the knowledge tiles, etc.
But after watching the how it's played YouTube video, playing on the app a few times, and taking it to the table, it's not intimidating at all, and quite fun.
My main issue with it is being able to differentiate the tiles. It's a shame the artwork was done by a class of kindergarteners.

Wish there were some Axis and Allies or old Avalon Hill game players in my area.

Same. Shoot me a message if you're ever up Birmingham way. I love Avalon Hill-esque strategy games.

Anybody play Dune Imperium?

For those of you who like Baldur's Gate but don't want to get too far into the weeds of a DnD experience, Gloomhaven and Frosthaven are awesome options that share similar mechanics (use cards instead of dice, advantage/disadvantage, party up to 4 characters, etc)
I can’t really recommend either to someone who’s not a board game enthusiast.
For someone who’s interested though, I will recommend Jaws of the Lion.

Dune Imperium is a good game. I've played it a few times. It's a nice combination of deckbuilding and worker placement.

I've got a place in Henry County. Not exactly near Birmingham.

Used to play Axis and Allies with my boss when lived in Stillwater Oklahoma. He would come over Friday right after work and several times would wear the same clothes Monday as we would binge play the whole weekend.
The looters/vandals of my other house got my copy of the game. Bought it in 1989 for like $60 and it was still a complete game, never so much as spilled a beer on a IPC note.
