Ya'll have me nervous about using tap water and scale build up. I've been using Baton Rouge tap water which tastes great but I fight scale in my pool and don't want the same in my espresso machine. I thought about filters but what should I get? Can I filter some tap water to fill my reservoir?

A filter is good, and will help remove some minerals and contaminants that mess with the flavor, but scale is caused by hard water, and I'm not sure of a filter that makes hard water "soft" outside of a water softener.
I'm probably wrong.

Buy gallons of distilled water at the grocery and you can buy mineral packets of third wave from amazon.

I use Third Wave minerals in distilled water that I get by the gallon from Target.
My coffee roaster distills his own water and adds 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda to remineralize.
There’s a million recipes, like Barista Hustle, and R Pavlis water.
Baton Rouge tap water would run a high risk of dropping scale, messing up your system.

Haha, this pretty much sums up every “hobby” I’ve ever taken up.
Me - “I think I want a better cup of coffee in the mornings, maybe I’ll get an espresso machine. Oh how about this $300 dehlongi, it looks nice! Wait, let me check Reddit and Tigerdroppings first….”
5 days later:
Me - “Babe, trust me, $1600 in an espresso machine, $400 in a grinder, a new coffee bar, oh and we have to make our own water now….gonna be great! Oh, that double oven you’ve been asking for, go for it!”
At this point I just want to stay committed to NOT roasting my own beans!

I’m not going to act like I’m all knowing, but scale is usually from calcium and magnesium and are generally good for you. Scale is usually easily removed by acid like this crazy thing called vinegar. If you run vinegar through your machine occasionally or wait until it’s needed as in your water flow is slower, it breaks the scale down.
It’s a lot easier to run vinegar through your machine than it is to purchase special water imo. The only issue with vinegar is it takes quite a few runs through to rinse it out.

Lmao this is exactly me too. I was about to talk my wife into an instant hot water reverse osmosis system. Sold it as she could have instant hot water for tea. Read James Hoffmans book about coffee at home and he said stressing about water isn’t worth it, so scratched the idea.

Coffee is the best. Red and white beans get nasty

My daily is Ethiopian Sidamo from Fresh Roasted Coffee. I get 2lbs auto shipped for $27 or so. I also have 3 bags of beans from Cherry I plan to bust out at some point.
I want to get some from Alinea. He’s now based out of Bearcat Baked on Julia. He made me the best Americano I’ve ever had. Really good single origin espresso.

Pop those cherries.
You have any issue with the thermal block priming? My steam wand is acting a little weird. It spits water and won’t put out steam.

You making espresso with these? Have any issues being a light roast?

Plan to, sitting in the freezer at the moment.
No issues with the steam wand so far. Reach out to Espresso Outlet if yours is still acting up. They’re very responsive.
Yeah, I think the light roast will be a little tougher to dial in. I’m only using it because it’s what I have open currently. Probably should learn on a medium or espresso roast.

Haitian Blue
Black Knight
I just ordered two pounds of each of these. Completely different styles. If I can’t taste the difference in these two shots than I’m fricking something up.
I got a coffee specific scale, generic WDT tool and some espresso glasses. My shots were perfect this morning.
