Obviously, it was a problem, but only one.

No pass rush

Linebackers often/usually slow to the runner or behind the play either run support or coverage

DBs out of position/beaten frequently

Poor tackling even if a defender was surprisingly in position to make a play

I mean, you don't get to the 100s in defensive rankings solely on the basis of a poor pass rush.

DL play has suffered for years now. Coach O had our guys firing off the ball in 2015-2016 before Aranda changed the scheme.

True but poor LB play hurt the defense, poor secondary play hurt the defense, poor tackling hurt the defense.

The defense was bad at every level could not even do routine things correctly.

to be fair, it seems we at least pressured the QB last year once we put Perk on the field. This year, we really didn't pressure QB's at the same rate imo.

It’s sad when Whit Weeks looked like the most polished LB.

No one could figure out how to play zone.

The edges couldn’t contain.

It was really baffling.

My only thought is that House must’ve been trying to implement an NFL scheme on these guys and had them thinking instead of reacting. But then you had holdovers from last year and previous years like Burns who shouldn’t have been anywhere near as bad as he has been.

The defense since 2020 has been the most confusing thing to see as an LSU fan. 3 coordinators and all of them have completely sucked. At least Daronte got to try some of his stuff in the Alabama game. It was pathetic that Kiffin had to tell Orgeron that his defense needed to blitz. It’s worrying that Kelly couldn’t fix scheme and technique issues on defense but it could be simply that he was working overtime on the offense and put all of his eggs in that basket.

It’s easy to dump on Burns and I am NOT suggesting he played well.

But with the terrible DL, LB and CB play the safeties are already behind the 8 ball so it’s pointless to single him out.

As bad as he looked, there were a lot of times where he was chasing down someone else’s mistake.

He’s a guy who may look a whole lot better next year with competent coaching and a better front 7.

This is what absolutely blew my mind watching our defense all year. How could anyone watch our defense and think, "No, this is good, this is exactly what a competitive defense looks like!" I know being a coach can be a prideful thing and they are hesitant to change, but wouldn't you think at some point you would look at that abomination and at least TRY and change things? We got gashed anytime we played a team with a pulse on offense and it wasn't just a few times a game, it was basically the whole game! So not only did we not make any changes throughout the year, we doubled-down on stupid and never changed anything during the game!

Agreed.

I'm shocked they haven't gone after a proven pass rusher in the portal.

A new DC is going to help out the pass rush nd defense overall.

They have some guys there that can make an impact. Wil it be enough?

Top guys were snatched up and paid handsomely before House was fired.

I still believe there may have been a better showing in the portal if Kelly fired House immediately after A&M game. Would have given fans and recruits a sense of hope. But Kelly wanted to clean House and rightly so. You cannot fire 4 coaches and have 4 people fill in for a bowl game.

We had a guy that could be the #1 DL taken in the draft next year finish the season with < 30 tackles and 2.5 sacks...

D-Line got pushed back 2 yards on about every run play. No chance to really stop the run or the pass.

Taking Harold Perkins out of an aggressive position still amazes me.

They had it in them, last three plays of bowl is evidence. I'd love to know the inside story on that.

Can you explain to me what scheme House is/was running all season? Because I keep hearing over and over "the scheme" was bad.

Kind of hard when 4 are constantly battling 5 and 6! His unwillingness to being 5 or 6 and try and generate pressure was his biggest undoing. He ABSOLUTELY refused to consistently try and bring pressure.

You are exactly correct and what I complained about the entire season. LSU lined up virtually the same every play and made no effort to confuse OLine blocking assignment, which is most often the reason defenders run free on a QB. Everything else you said was spot on. This must change with a new DC
Attack attack and attack again but in different ways
