Iowa punter Tory Taylor set the NCAA single-season record for punting yards after his first boot in the Citrus Bowl against Tennessee.

Taylor’s 67-yard punt broke the NCAA single-season record (4,138), which was set by Michigan State’s Johnny Pingel in 1938. Pingel’s record came 15 years before the Spartans joined the Big Ten. Taylor now has 4,186 punting yards.

That's an amazing(depressing)stat for a 10 win team. May never be broken because most teams that punt this much won't play 14 games in a season.

What's crazy is that record was set during a time where punting was used as an offensive weapon. It wasn't unheard of for coaches to punt on second and third down in those days to unexpectedly pin the opposing offense deep in their own territory.

Tory Taylor broke that record because his offense was so freaking bad...

I remember teams doing this back in the day (80s). Rarely, but a QB would punt down an open field on 3rd and long to pin a team back. This was back when defense was more of a priority and games were lower scoring.

2023 season produced a team with the Best Offense in CFB accompanied with the absolute worst defense imaginable.

And another team with an all world defense/Special Teams with the most putrid Offense conceivable.

Each team finishing with the exact same 10-3 record. *Yes Iowa had 4 losses w/ the extra Conf. Champ game, but that is erroneous.
