It turns out that Google was tracking you even when you were in 'incognito' mode and thought you were safe.

Did anyone actually believe that they weren't being tracked in 'incognito' mode?

Google settles $5 billion consumer-privacy lawsuit: report--Market Watch link

quote:

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has agreed to settle a consumer-privacy lawsuit that alleged the company secretly tracked millions of people who thought they were browsing the internet privately, according to a Reuters report Thursday.

The lawsuit sought at least $5 billion. Settlement terms were not disclosed, but the lawyers said they expected to present a formal settlement for court approval by Feb. 24, 2024.

The plaintiffs claim Google’s GOOGL, -0.53% GOOG, -0.51% analytics, cookies and apps let the company track their activity even when they set Google’s Chrome browser to “Incognito” mode and other browsers to “private” browsing status.

Plaintiffs share $100 million, so each user gets $10.

Lawyers get $4.9 billion.

So are they stopping the practice too or just paying the fine and can now say that "you know how we do so can't say you didn't know, so no more fines suckas"?

Don’t think anyone uses incognito to be hidden from google anyways.

People use incognito so “big fat sexy arse black women porn” doesn’t show up in their search history on their computer for someone else to find.

Like that's going to stop them.

Data is king and they are not stopping. They will just invent another way, if they haven't already.

I haven't tried that search.

Did it return good results?

Years and years ago, I bought the domain name asianpreggoshiteaters.com and linked it to my buddy's Facebook page. it brought in a niche customer base im sure. It was a drunk night buy and do but I still laughed when I sobered up.

So do we all get $1 for each time we were looking at porn in incognito mode, believing that no one was tracking?

Lawyers get the money not the victims.
