Heading to St John in January. Flying direct in to STT from IAH. I know the only way over to St John is via ferry, and we are considering taking the option from downtown Charlotte Amalie which is $12 and 40 minutes versus only $6 and 20 minutes from Red Hook.

How do we get to either ferry port? Is it easy to grab a cab, or do people use Uber on St Thomas? Do we need to book anything in advance?

Taxi, It’s really simple. Grab your bags and walk outside.

Yep - just have some cash on you.

Thanks all. It’s been 7 years since we’ve been to STJ so wasn’t sure if that changed.

Make sure to check the ferry schedule. I would just take the one where the time works out best.

We always hop over from red Hook. We got a van for the whole family last time and it was $100.

Piggy-backing on my own OP, does anyone have a company for jeep rentals they typically use?

Discount Car Rental-St. Thomas

I know most people prefer to rent on St. John but the last time we were there we couldn’t find anything on St. John so we took the car ferry instead. We used this company and they were quick and easy. Had a 4 door jeep with like 50 miles on it.

I’ve used aqua blue twice. Been pleased with them.

You are going to get a split between people that swear by renting on St Thomas and those that rent on St. John.

The ones that rent on St Thomas will say it’s cheaper and you can stop and pick up groceries. But you have to use the car barge and if something happens, your rental company is on St. Thomas not St. John.

We rent on St. John. You can usually park in their lot in Cruz Bay which helps sometimes. We typically use Courtesy but I got alittle pissed that they automatically charge you the extra cleaning fee. We had a second jeep for a large group last time that never went to the beach and still got charged.

I used Slim Man on St John last time for Jeep rental. Zero issues.

Parking in the Cruz Bay area can be a problem but for $50 extra a week we parked at our rental company L&L Jeep Rental.

It was literally steps to the square and we could run down from the house in the Chocolate hole area in 10 minutes to eat, shop etc..

Because we knew we had a great parking spot, we ending going downtown almost daily, certainly more often than we would have had we had to fight to pay to park.

L&L is who I am looking at for our trip in July specifically for that reason.

and one bonus of taking the taxi to Red Hook is sitting at the ferry dock drinking that first painkiller (or 2 or 3) knowing you made it to the islands.

We like Red Hook Ferry; we also rent our car on St. John. Just like everyone said, check availability because they sell out fast.

"On "island time" is real..getting them to call back was the biggest issue we had with them. By the time they did call back, they were out of 4 door Jeeps but a 2 door worked out fine

I've been in that exact same spot, where there is a brick wall and you are about to curve right heading down to Trunk Bay. We can't wait to be back!

The reason why I asked about the Jeep rentals is b/c last time we were there, it was with another couple, and they handled the rental.

Take the ferry from Crown Bay. 5 mins from the airport. 35 min boat ride unless you get motion sickness easily. It's cheaper than a car to Red Hook too.

This is exactly what we want to do. However, that ferry route only runs 3 times per day.

Flight lands at 4:40p and the ferry from Crown Bay is 5:30p. I think that should work out unless we are delayed. We won't be checking any luggage.

Making that ferry won't be an issue unless flights are delayed. You should be able to purchase your ferry tickets online.
