With the standard deduction so high these days, you would have to donate so much to actually have it make a difference when itemizing.

Everyone I know who shops there needs it.

Goodwill Industries brings in $61M a year and their CEO makes $600K. I know that sounds like a lot but UGA football brings in $203M and Kirby gets paid $10M.

Ok that makes me feel a little better about that business (I guess)
Since Goodwill is distasteful to you, might I recommend that you start and operate am enterprise to distribute donated items to those you find needy?

I often carry around bags of clothes that I don't wear anymore. I offer them to the hobo's on the side of the road. More often than not they tell me to frick off.
For that reason I carry 40’s of Malt Liquor for which they thank me.

It's a for-profit business with a great marketing plan.

You give money
Their administration takes about 95% of every dollar to pad their pockets.
They give back 5% to the needy

America's Thrift stores in Alabama generally have pretty decent donations

Just like you dropping off your old crap at someone's house so they can have a garage sale.

Exactly. Goodwill is in the business of employing disabled people, NOT being a thrift store.

They get donations (for free) (tax deductible for donor), then sell it; use money to help charities and disabled. Win-win

So….Pennies on the dollar return. Ok.

People drop off shite every single day they do not want anymore and instead of taking all of the clothes, furniture, etc to people who are in desperate need of these items, they build massive stores and sell it to people who are not in desperate need of the items sold in the store?

The money-making grift you really should see is the business operations of recycled textiles and rag companies. They are usually run by Turkish and Middle Eastern folk around here. The owners and sons all drive G-wagons or gowdy luxury cars parked outside the shittiest warehouse imaginable in lots jam-packed with barely running cars of their likely illegal workforce.
they put clothing donation bins out in parking lots and buy crap goodwill can sell. Then sell them in bulk to Africa.

All the OP had to do was look at the Wiki:
That's a nice percentage going to the people they are helping. If all the revenue going to charitable services goes to employing people it's $16,891 per person.
quote:
In fiscal year 2018, Goodwill organizations generated $6.1 billion in revenue, of which $5.27 billion was spent on charitable services, and $646 million was spent on salaries and other operating expenses. Services constituted 89 percent of expenses.[8] In 2015, the group served more than 37 million people, with more than 312,000 people placed into employment.

NO. I am asking a legit question.
I only help myself, family and friends. I am not an open charity. I do enough charity work so I have zero desire to run a scam business like Goodwill. If Goodwill is so wonderful then why are they building shiny new multi million dollar stores in every fricking town? MILTI MILLION DOLLAR STORES. Let me say that one more time, MULTI MILLION DOLLAR stores.

Better then donating to the Catholic church
- which would be used to hide/defend pedophiles.

Do your community a favor and donate to local thrift stores, not Goodwill.

Yeah. There is an interesting video about how some of this junk ends up being sold in African markets and hurts their own manufacturing or local crafts.
Plus a lot of it they don’t even want, so it gets stacked up on beaches in Africa.
Basically it would be better if we as a society didn’t buy so much clothes and instead bought nice stuff and wore it until it was worn out. Fast fashion is bad for the environment (and I am far from a tree hugger).

It's a tremendously large employer of physically and mentally disabled individuals. They sort, stock, and manage the stores and intakes. Proceeds also directly benefit workplace training programs.
Personally, I love that there is a place for me to take my things so that they don't just end up in a dump somewhere.
