re: When people can’t put their pet down when the pet is suffering

Its because people would rather satisfy their own desires than be compassionate for others. I cannot stand people that do this. They are thinking of themselves more than the suffering animal. How sad they would be than what's best for the dog. I don't think its a malicious thing but they are thinking of themselves more. PERIOD.

I don’t mean to be that guy, but is the dog all that dad has left at home? He is 80. If mom is gone and the home is empty that dog may very well be what is keeping him holding on.

Such a tough decision. Especially when the pet still has "moments" of normalcy (like his/her "old self").
I've had to do it multiple times and it wrecks me every fricking time.

Put the dog down yourself and get him a cat

Does your dad live alone?
Has he always had a pet?
I’m thinking he doesn’t want to let go & be alone
For a lot of older folks their pet is their reason to get up every morning & it keeps them active
Maybe go to the vet with him the next time & ask questions regarding the shots
He may be telling your Dad they aren’t working & your Dad won’t listen or he will have to answer if he’s ripping off an elderly man attached to his Dog
Then talk to your Dad about what the next steps are & let him know there are shelters full of senior dogs that need homes

We stayed in the room when we had to put down our dog 12 years ago.
That was so F’n brutal. I was a wreck. Wife (no pics) just had our first born 4 days prior and my mom died 4 months prior. That dog’s death represented the death of my youth… lost my mom and wasn’t ready to be a dad (so I thought) yet.

Once you get an animal is it 100% up to you to care for said animal. If it’s clearly in pain all the time and has “zero” good moments, then the human is just selfish. Do the right thing for the animal…not the human

Just want to say that this can be done at home if you have time to arrange it. I had to put down the best dog I ever had. The vet first gave her sedative that put her under just as if she was to have surgery. It was very peaceful but still the hardest thing I have ever done.

Maybe your dad sees himself in the dog (being very old) and doesn't want to put him down because that would be like saying he himself should be put down.

What else are you going to do at80? 95% of 80 year olds are just waiting to die. Have some fun, what's the worst case, he passes away and doesn't suffer the last few years of his life?

Cant speak for anyone else, but im hoping/planning to live to 100, at least- good health willing and the creek dont rise…. .. im in my 40s, so by the time i get there it’ll be more commonplace to live to 100.. of course, all that assumes that some A hole who’s texting and driving doesnt come along and t-bone me .

When it comes to stuff like this, I’d be concerned that the animal may be in pain or feel fear as they go to sleep.

Finally convinced her it was time and the right thing to do for the cat. That's no way to live. In home is the best option for sure.

If the dog is suffering then I would agree it needs to pass on

Slide it some sleeping pills. We had our two dogs past this past year( in home euthanasia and the other kidney failure ( died in my arms). Still hurts thinking about it as they were with us before marriage. Reflecting back, Sometimes I wish my wife would have just slid mine sleeping pills as I prolonged his life for almost 2 years.
