In the head by his sister with a 22 while rabbit hunting. WTF! Isn’t that illegal?

Authorities said the incident happened on Saturday, December 2 just after 9:30 p.m. on Alex Knight Road in southern Jones County.
Deputies said an 11-year-old boy was shot in the head with a .22 caliber rifle by his 12-year-old sister while hunting rabbits. They said their 19-year-old step-brother was with the two children at the time of the incident.

The 11-year-old was taken to Forrest General Hospital in critical condition.

Yes, it’s usually illegal to shoot someone.

yep.

Not sure about using a .22

ETA:

Firearms, archery equipment, and primative firearms used for deer
can be used on quadrupeds in Louisiana.

.22 can be used, see below.

quote:

A. (1) No person shall do any of the following: (a) Hunt or shoot a deer or bear at any time with a firearm smaller than a . 22 caliber centerfire, or a shotgun using a shell load

First off that is in reference to deer and bear, the article said they were shooting rabbits, secondly it says .22 centerfire, I doubt they were using centerfire for rabbits

And you can use anything on quadrupeds that you can use on deer and bears.

Secondly, they weren’t hunting. They were bulleye’n. Only quadrupeds you can do that with is nutria and beaver.

Thirdly, it’s not in Louisiana, but im sure the law is similar or the same in the state they are in.

Spotlighting rabbits and likely had either poor muzzle discipline or a negligent discharge.

The part about rabbit hunting with a 22. Even if it’s not illegal it’s dangerous as hell

I’m not a Hunter but I figured .22 was perfect for rabbits.
Shooting at night is the dangerous part, to me.

Years and years ago I took care of young guy who was accidently shot in the head with a .22 while nutra hunting. Amazingly after months in ICU and Rehab, he was able to walk down the isle for his wedding. Crazy how those things can happen so quick.

well I'm confused. .22 is THE rabbit rifle

You suggesting only shotguns? Because that probably would've had the same outcome in this scenario

I could rabbit hunt every day for the next 3 seasons to let shotgun kills catchup w 22 kills.

Pilot town in 70s and 80s rabbits were like rats in French quarter. Also I didn’t realize shooting them at night was not legal

I dont know where you pulled that law from but you are mistaking in the context that you are using it....think about it it clearly states that you can not use anything smaller than a .22 center fire, that would mean you could not squirrel hunt, coon hunt, nutria hunt etc with a .22 long rifle or a .17 which you can legally do, you are making assumptions about laws pertaining to large game also apply to small game by taking one sentence out of the regulations and trying to apply it across the board

quote:

LEGAL GEAR Legal archery gear or a shotgun not larger than a 10 gauge fired from the shoulder is legal for taking all resident game birds and quadrupeds. Handgun, rifle and falconry (special permit required) is legal for taking all game species EXCEPT turkey. Air rifles are legal for taking squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, opossum and outlaw quadrupeds.
