My mom is undiagnosed BPD. Married and divorced 4 times.

The 4th husband married her because she told him she had cancer (She didn't. Just some benign fibroid tumors in her uterus.) and she was unemployed and he wanted her to have health insurance. I guess at some point he figured it out and filed for divorce. This was the first time one of her husbands wanted a divorce and she didn't, so it threw her into a tailspin.

The estranged husband called me one day after they had split because someone found her wandering around her neighborhood incoherently. She was lucid enough to tell the person that found her to call the recent ex-husband (I'm sure it was planned, for sympathy). He was beyond done with her at that point, so he called me to deal with it. She had just taken too much of whatever medication she was on and was loopy.

I don't know of anyone who has BPD and is not an absolute trainwreck. Bipolar people can absolutely function and thrive with proper medication and treatment.

Just causing a mess at home.
Tearing house apart.

diagnosed as bipolar or just has signs of being bipolar the family wants to self-diagnose as being bipolar?

Been there. Done that. Got roped in by the you know what. Totally blinded by it. Her conditions got worse and I said enough. Couldnt stay on the meds long enough to level out. Last I heard she is on her 4th hubby. She had a then 4 year old boy who I raised for 2 years. Bio dad got him back and got him straight. Thank god for that. Oh, did I mention it was fire!!!

Meds just quit working more times than not. I've been married 12 years to a woman with bipolar. Early in the marriage she tried almost every drug to control it. All of them became unless within 6 months. She would either nose dive into depression or worse she would go super manic for weeks to months at a time. After realizing the drugs dont work, at least with her, we took her off and quit trying. Instead we understand the cycles and manage either the mania or the depression. Guess what? She's had less episodes with less intensity. Drugs arent a kill shot and can make shite worse if not managed.

Bipolar suddenly? Consider illicit drugs instead.

low functioning borderlines are the ones like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction who will go absolutely bonkers on you. they're much more obvious with their actions, but they can also be dangerous.

high functioning or "quiet" borderlines are much harder to spot, and even if you have suspicions, there's no real way of confirming in most cases. and until you figure out how they work, think, and act you will undoubtedly be pushed to the edge of your own sanity trying to understand what the frick is going on. and then even once you've got it somewhat figured out, you will still be driven to teh edge of your own sanity trying to manage them.

When they’re manic, everything is great. They’re the most charming, intelligent, interesting, brilliant, funny, caring person you’ve ever met,
That's not mania. In mania they are up all night, talking a mile a minute, silly or irritable, grandiose and delusional, over spending money, doing risky things, seemingly boundlessly energetic, plus/minus some of those symptoms. You may be thinking of mild hypo-mania.

How do you know the difference between BPD, bipolar, or just normal crazy women?

An old friend went through that. It was a nightmare. She would write on the walls, take all the doorknobs off of the doors and scream at cars going by in front of their house. Worse, she had an inheritance and met a lawyer in one of her group therapy sessions.

I was married to a woman with borderline personality disorder. I asked the therapist if that was like bipolar.

He told me I wished it was bipolar. That can be treated with medication. Pretty much no cure for BPD.
