Americans need an extra $11,400 today just to afford the basics

The typical American household must spend an additional $11,434 annually just to maintain the same standard of living they enjoyed in January of 2021, right before inflation soared to 40-year highs, according to a recent analysis of government data.
Such figures underscore the financial squeeze many families continue to face even as the the rate of U.S. inflation recedes and the economy by many measures remains strong, with the jobless rate at a two-decade low.
Even so, many Americans say they aren't feeling those gains, and this fall more people reported struggling financially than they did prior to the pandemic, according to CBS News polling. Inflation is the main reason Americans express pessimism about economy despite its bright points, which also include stronger wage gains in recent years.

Where inflation bites hardest
Around the U.S., the state with the highest additional expenditures to afford the same standard of living compared with 2021 is Colorado, where a household must spend an extra $15,000 per year, the JEC analysis found. Residents in Arkansas, meanwhile, have to spend the least to maintain their standard of living, at about $8,500 on an annual basis.
The differences in costs are tied to local economic differences. For instance, typical housing in Colorado requires an additional $267 per month compared with January 2021, while other states saw much smaller increases, the analysis found.

Lets print some more money to send to foreign countries! That'll fix it!

it's probably higher than that, tbh. im probably near that mark just in insurance and food price increases.
my business operating expenses are up almost 40% from 2 or 3 years ago.

I guess some people are starting to figure out that there’s a difference in wanting something and needing something.

Whats maddening is that people will still vote the same damn way. Something like this should make people change their voting pattern, but it just wont.

I doubt we are there yet. People are still eating out like crazy and taking lots of vacations.
People still don’t understand that they mostly have a spending problem and not an income problem

I was discussing with my son how tight things are compared to pre-Covid. He’s noticed how we used to have more money to spend back then, but now we’re watching money much more closely.

This is impossible, I saved 41 cents on my July 4th cookout. We’re all living good.

We have a couple of vacation properties at the beach and rentals were significantly down this year. Pre-booking for next summer is the lowest we've had in 5 years.
The indicators of pain are already there.

Nobody is going to stop spending. The beautiful orange man loved throwing out COVID bucks. I doubt we are even seeing the effects of Build Back Better/Inflation Reduction Act spending yet.

Why stop spending when people can just suck off the government tit after? Or just go steal whatever and not get charged for it and then the price is raised when I go to spend my hard earned money there?

These seems pretty accurate compared to the 'official" inflation numbers.

The government needs to be giving us all an extra $11,400 until they fix this mess.
