Who wanted Whitmore over Hawkins?

SI.com

ETA:

Look, I don't know what his ceiling is as a player, but he likely wouldn't be contributing to this team the way Hawkins is currently.

That was the point of the thread.

I do realize Trey spent time in the G his rookie season.

Yal are crazy to be this definitive this early. By that argument, TM3 was an absolute bust early on right?

I see you didn't read the thread, only the title, prior to posting. Thats ok. You do you.

ETA: I put more relevant info in the OP.... just in case.

Obviously the jury is still out.

But it's not even about one saying they think we should have drafted Whitmore over Hawkins. If you said that, it's truly no big deal.

It's the depths people go in the moment and hell, even long after to tell us that the FO or anyone who disagrees is an idiot and they don't know what they're talking about, and so on and so forth...

Then after the fact(and again, this debate isn't over remotely) if they're wrong, they either don't admit it at all or just say, "yea, my bad" and move on.

injuries played a huge factor in him getting playing time. Which I guess is a blessing in disguise for his development. No ones hurt on the rockets and they have their established first 8 already

Hawkins is 2 years older. His draft projection was an NBA ready now shooter.

Cam was 18 on draft day - he needs more time in the oven. Like Dyson (younger than Hawkins) who we got at 18 and is a work in progress.

I love when people bring this up as if Murphy had some kind of demotion to the G-League and spent a bunch of time there. He played 6 games, spread out over the course of 4 months.

I wouldn't call what Trey did getting assigned to the G-League. It was more of him getting some time to practice or work on a few specific things sporadically throughout the year. It's not like they said go play in the G-League for the next 3-4 weeks b/c you aren't ready for NBA minutes or we can't keep playing you b/c you suck.

He played in 34 of the first 36 games, and struggled a bit shooting. He basically sat out the month of January missing 12 of the next 14 games, something similar to what Tyrese Maxey experienced the year before.

He played a game on 12/7 instead of playing against Denver, 1 of the 2 games he missed in the first 36.

He played a game on 12/13, and played in the nba games before and after that.

He then played a game on 1/23, even though he had been sitting out the previous 10 nba games.

He played on 2/28 and 3/1, which were inbetween nba games he played in, again likely just getting practice in.

He played on 3/7 missing nba game the day before and after.
After that last game missed on 3/8, he played 20mpg in the final 23 games including the playoffs and shot 44% from 3. He was 34% in the 45 games he played in before that.

There's a difference between playing a game once a month in the G-League, likely b/c the coaches asked you to go try to do something specific in that game that you wouldn't get the opportunity to do in a regular season game, like maybe ask Trey to be more aggressive as a scorer instead of just being a catch and shoot 3 point guy, or maybe ask him to defend bigger guys. That's different then being asked to go spend a month straight in the G-League and being away from the team. Trey was never away from the team for more than a day or two, in those 5 stints he made.

Whitmore is the youngest player in the league I believe. Pels fans are famous for cashing checks early.

As if that was a bad idea at that time. Anyone can say and talk now when the results come in. Not everyone can be 100%. Who thought Hawkins defense would be this good and his offense is the one that needs to be worked on? Both of these guys are still young. So don’t count out Cam just yet.

I was high on Lively and Wallace but they got drafted before us.

He’s only being assigned to the G-League because they want him to get regular playing time. The Rockets just have so many good young players that it’s hard to get all of them regular playing time. Whitmore has been really good in the time he’s gotten.
